Dowling College Psi Chi Honored As National Model Chapter
Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, has designated the Dowling College chapter of the organization as a Model Chapter. Only 35 of the 1,039 Chapters of Psi Chi across the country earned such a distinction. This is the second consecutive year that the Dowling College student group has been recognized for its outstanding efforts.
This past year, the Dowling College Psi Chi chapter was instrumental in prompting the launch of a National Food Drive Initiative by the national organization. The Dowling chapter also proposed an amendment to the Psi Chi Constitution for the establishment of a National Leadership Conference (NLC), which was approved by the entire membership. This marked the first time in the 76-year history of Psi Chi that a local chapter proposed (and had passed) a national referendum.
The Dowling College Psi Chi chapter is very active on campus. Students hold bi-weekly meetings, organize Fall and Spring dinners, and host speakers from Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, the Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) and elsewhere. Involved students conduct an annual Thanksgiving Food Drive for the needy in conjunction with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and made visits to Sagamore Children's Hospital during the past year. The Chapter recently presented at the Eastern Psychological Association in Boston and worked cooperatively with other colleges in the region on the 2005 Long Island Psychology Conference.
Al Kennedy III served as President of the Dowling College Chapter of Psi Chi during the past year. Linda Sarkadi (entering President) was Vice President during 2004-2005. Other students who played leadership roles were Michael Chetta, Yvonne Ioli, and Jennifer Yacoub. Dr. Robert Youth and Dr. Mitchell Laube serve as faculty advisors for the group, which will mark its 30th year of work and activities this September. Membership in Psi Chi is by invitation. The organization is open to students who excel in their studies, in the field and overall.
