Annual NY State Marine Education Association Conference, June 3-5
The New York State Marine Education Association (NYSMEA) will hold its annual conference from June 3-5, 2005 at Dowling College's two campuses, located in Oakdale and Shirley, Long Island. As part of the conference program, NYSMEA is offering an impressive roster of speakers, educational daytime diversions by air, land and sea, and several networking and professional development opportunities through informative lectures and workshops.
To kick-off the conference, attendees have the option to participate in a flyover of one the nation's most significant estuaries, the South Shore Estuary Reserve, with flights departing hourly from Dowling's aviation complex in Shirley. Following the aerial tour of the reserve, participants can experience Dowling's state-of-the-art flight simulator and then choose between a trip to nearby Atlantis Marine World Aquarium or Brookhaven National Laboratory. The alternative for Friday is a full-day, hands-on field trip to explore the unique environment of the Sunken Forest at Fire Island National Seashore.
On Friday evening, all attendees will enjoy a wine and cheese hour sponsored by Atlantis Marine World, followed by a delectable dinner with guest speaker Dr. Paula M. Mikkelson, from the Invertebrate Zoology Department at the American Museum of Natural History.
Over the course of the conference, attendees can participate in a host of exciting excursions to the following locations: Connetquot Trout Fish Hatchery, Bayard Cutting Arboretum, Suffolk Marine Museum, Hechsher State Park, Robert Moses State Park/Fire Island Lighthouse. Additional field trips include a kayaking trip from Dowling's waterfront campus in Oakdale and a horseshoe crab walk with Dr. John T. Tanacredi, professor and chairman of the Earth and Marine Sciences Department at Dowling College.
The NYSMEA conference is being held in cooperation with Dowling College, the American Museum of Natural History, Wildlife Conservation Society/New York Aquarium, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island State Parks, Fire Island National Seashore, Suffolk County Marine Museum, Atlantis Marine World, New York Sea Grant and Long Island Sound Study.
