India Heritage Institute Presents Cultural Music & Dance Recital At Dowling College

Artists from the India Heritage Institute of Long Island will perform a culturally inspired music and dance recital on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at 4:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of Fortunoff Hall on Dowling College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. This event is part of Dowling's yearlong celebration of Asian culture and is free and open to the public.

Performers include Malini Srinivasan, a celebrated third-generation Bharatanatyam dancer and teacher, Dr. Rohini B. Ramanathan, a trained Indian classical (Carnatic) musician and vocalist, Guru Thesjeswini Raj, an accomplished professional dance teacher who plays the Nattuvangam (dance percussion), A.R. Balaskandan, performing the South Indian classical music drum Mrdangam, Ravi Srinivasan, playing the violin, and Seorie Autar, who will play the Tambura (Drone).

Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form, which features nrtta (pure movement or technique) and abhinaya (mime or expression). The dance form was developed in the South of India in an area known today as Tamil Nadu. Its roots date back to the Natya Shastra, the text on ancient Indian drama in 2 B.C. During the early 19th Century, the poet-musicians and dancers of the Tanjore Court, patronized by the Chola rulers, developed the music and dance until it approximately attained the structure we see performed today. The art form is continually being reconstructed and redirected, a trend started by Rukmini Devi who developed the Kalakshetra style in the early 20th century.

The recital program will begin with an invocation by vocalist Ramanathan, followed by four captivating Bharatanatyam performances titled: "Slokam and Alaripu in Raagam Naatai, Khanda Chapu Talam"; "Varnam in Kaambodhi Raagam, Adi Taalam"; "Padam in Suruti Raagam, Misra Chapu Talam"; and "Thillana in Hamir Kalyani Raagam, Adi Taalam." The recital culminates with a concluding prayer "Mangalam" (Conclusion).
