Asian Theme Events: Songs from the Land of Morning Calm: Korea

On Monday, March 21 at 2:30 p.m., Dowling College will host Songs from the Land of Morning Calm: Korea with musical performances by soprano soloist Soh Young Lee-Segredo, accompanied by pianist Dr. Ann Zalkind.

Taking place in the Fortunoff Hall Ballroom at Dowling's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale, the program begins with the Korean National Anthem, followed by "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor" and includes an eclectic blend of holiday, education, classical, folk, pop, spiritual and healing songs. The original song, "Deep Sorrow of Tsunami" will be premiered at this concert. The program culminates with the artist's favorite show tune, "Climb Every Mountain" from 1965 musical sensation, "The Sound of Music."

Recipient of L.I. Arts Council Art Grants for both 2004 and 2005, Mrs. Lee-Segredo has been singing since the age of five and performing as a soloist since age 15. After immigrating to the United States at age 18, she joined the All City High School Chorus and performed in New York's Lincoln Center. While attending Queens College, she was a soloist singing both American and Korean National Anthems in Madison Square Garden for the International Tae Kwon Do Competition.

Mrs. Lee-Segredo is currently a fourth grade teacher in Jackson Main Elementary School in Hempstead, Music and Dance teacher in Throop Memorial Day Care Center in Rosedale, and a Korean storyteller. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College and Master of Arts degree from Bank Street College of Education in Educational Leadership, where she wrote her thesis titled, "Empowering Multicultural Education using Multiple Intelligences with Administrators, Community Leaders, Teachers, Parents and Students."

Following a notable New York debut at Town Hall in 1970, Dr. Zalkind has performed in the United States and Europe to critical acclaim. The New York Times especially noted her "genuine poetic gift, knowledge of musical styles, clarity, precision, thoughtful deliberation and temperament." She has performed in the "distinguished artist series" at the Kaufman Auditorium and has been soloist with The Baltimore Symphony, The Albany Symphony and The Atlantic Chamber Players. Dr. Zalkind received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Graduate School and University Center of the City of New York and has been on the faculties of the Peabody Conservatory and Skidmore College. She is currently a music teacher in Franklin Elementary School in Hempstead and is the Hempstead High School Selected Choir accompanist and was a part of their appearance in Carnegie Hall April 2004. Edwin Mellen Press published her book, A Study of Catalan Composer Federico Mompou's (1893-1987) Musica Callada, in 2002.

Soh Young Lee-Segredo and Ann Zalkind have been performing together since 2002.
