'Morality and Politics: Catholicism and Feminism' To Be Discussed at Dowling College

Dr. Amy R. Baehr, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Hofstra University, will address "Morality and Politics: Catholicism and Feminism" on Monday, April 4 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Hunt Room of Fortunoff Hall on Dowling College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale.

Dr. Baehr will discuss political philosopher John Rawls and his viewpoint that a just society can only be sustained if citizens holding diverse moral views also endorse a common public political conception of justice. In addition, Rawls argues that citizens (as voters or public officials) must use that common political conception of justice -- and not their diverse moral views -- as the ground on which to make political decisions. Catholicism and feminism are two of the moral views common to our culture. Dr. Baehr will pose the question, "How reasonable an expectation is it that citizens holding these doctrines will limit their use of political power (as voters or public officials) in the way Rawls thinks justice requires?"

Dr. Baehr is a graduate of Dickinson College and received her Ph.D. in philosophy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Her research focuses on the relationship between feminism and liberalism and her papers have appeared in anthologies, as well as in the Journal of Political Philosophy, the Journal of Social Philosophy, and Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy. Her edited volume, Varieties of Feminist Liberalism was published in 2004 by Rowman and Littlefield Press.
