Award Program Aids Students Pursuing Science/Math Teacher Certification

Nine Long Island residents have been awarded up to $10,000 and $20,000 scholarships through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Robert Noyce Scholarship Program at Dowling College. The funds were made available by a four-year $500,000 grant awarded to Dowling in August of 2003.

The Noyce Scholarship, named after Intel founder Robert Noyce, is awarded to a student who is pursuing New York State teacher certification in one or more areas of math or science. The NSF grant provides up to $10,000 per year for junior and senior undergraduate science and math majors in Dowling's teacher training program. In addition, awards of up to $10,000 were given to "career changers", individuals with undergraduate math, computer science or science degrees who pursue their teacher certification at Dowling on the graduate level. Recipients will obtain New York State teacher certification in one or more areas of math or science and are required to complete two years of teaching in a school district that has a high need for math and science teachers for each year of scholarship or stipend.

Russell Ainbinder of Calverton was awarded a $20,000 scholarship ($10,000 each year for two academic years). One-year scholarships of up to $10,000 were awarded to Constance Chiraz of Nesconset, Paula Frischberg of Smithtown, Mary Hines of Stony Brook, David Brad Kenedy of Brightwaters, Ana Morales of Brentwood, Annette Renner of West Islip, E. Christopher Williams of Bay Shore, and Russell Wolf of Nesconset in the category of "career-changers."

Dr. Lori Zaikowski, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Natural Sciences, is Director of the program at Dowling, and mentor for the science recipients. Dr. John A. Craven, Associate Professor of Human Development and Learning, advises the scholars in regards to education requirements. Dr. Sandra Monteferrante, Professor of Mathematics, serves as mentor for the mathematics scholars.
