Dr. Robert Cincotta of Hempstead High School Named Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the Month

Dr. Robert Cincotta, a Health and Physical Education teacher at Hempstead High School and a resident of Massapequa Park, has been named a 2004-2005 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month.

Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.

Dr. Cincotta was honored for his love of learning and a strong belief that if students are to learn they must be active in their community. A 19-year veteran of the district, Dr. Cincotta has organized numerous volunteer community service efforts that include students in outdoor school beautification, spring cleanups, holiday visits, and gift giving to local hospitals.

"The work of Dr. Cincotta is testament that thoughtful, motivated teachers are community leaders," said Dr. Clyde Payne, Associate Provost of Dowling\'s School of Education, who presented the award. "By extending his teachings outside of the classroom to athletics and community initiatives, Dr. Cincotta has become an influential role model to students on many different levels."

Dr. Cincotta models behaviors he expects from his students, according to Wilfredo Lyons, a colleague who nominated him. "He believes that we are all trying to make positive changes and that there is strength in numbers," Lyons wrote. "There is no grandstanding, but rather teamwork and effort. He is a pleasure and inspiration to work with."

Dowling College and News 12 visited Hempstead High School to present the award, and a special feature will air on News 12. This spring the 2004-2005 award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
