Dowling College Professors To Discuss High Stakes Testing

One of the most controversial topics in public education today will be in the spotlight when Dr. Dale and Dr. Bonnie Johnson, Professors of Education at Dowling College, present, "High-Stakes Testing" on Wednesday, February 9 at 7 pm in the Fortunoff Hall Ballroom at Dowling's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. The event is free and open to the public.

The lecture will address a number of topics related to high-stakes testing in public schools, including the strong connection between poverty and poor test performance; the disparity between well-funded and under-funded classrooms; and the No Child Left Behind Act and the pressures it has created for children, their parents, and their teachers. Other topics to be discussed are the billions of dollars funneled to the testing, publishing, and tutoring industries; the disparities in schooling situations in New York State; the widening of test mandates to include preschool and university students; and the difficult realities of managing today\'s classrooms.

The Johnsons have been described by nationally known professor Dr. Carl Grant, of the University of Wisconsin, as the "Woodward and Bernstein of education for helping the nation understand the tyranny of high-stakes testing." Individually, the Johnsons have authored several books and text chapters, and together co-authored "High Stakes: Children, Testing and Failure in American Schools", which has received national acclaim since its publication in 2002.

Dr. Dale Johnson is past president of the 93,000-member International Reading Association, and has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he also served as Dean of the College of Education and Human Development. Dr. Bonnie Johnson previously served as the Bank One Endowed Associate Professor of Education at the University of Louisiana Monroe, and also taught at the University of Northern Iowa and Clarke College.
