James Hardy, a physics teacher at Cold Spring Harbor High School and a resident of Long Beach, has been named a 2005 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
Mr. Hardy, who has taught at Cold Spring Harbor High School since 1993, was honored for engaging his students with outstanding and creative lessons and physics demonstrations. His preparation and enthusiasm has earned him the overwhelming respect and admiration of his students and colleagues.
"It was a treat to see Mr. Hardy in action," said Dr. Clyde Payne, Associate Provost of Dowling's School of Education, who visited Cold Spring Harbor High School to present the award. "His students were actively involved in the lessons and had fun learning physics. The ability to motivate young people to that level is a gift. We are proud to honor Mr. Hardy. He is a valuable asset to our community."
"His classes are among the most exciting, vibrant learning environments in the entire school," wrote Dr. Thomas Dolan, principal of the Cold Spring Harbor High School in his nomination letter. Suzanne Feustel, the school's Science Department Chair, adds that Jim is a "natural teacher who makes a difficult job seem easy; the students relax, laugh, and learn to enjoy understanding the physics around them."
A special feature announcing Mr. Hardy's award will air during February on News 12. In June the 2005 award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
