Dowling College Announces New Bachelor's Degree Programs in Chemistry
Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree programs in Chemistry will be offered for the first time at Dowling College beginning in the Fall 2005 term.
"Both degrees prepare graduates for careers in teaching or for the pursuit of advanced degrees," said Dr. Richard Resch, Dowling\'s Provost. "The flexibility of the BA degree is especially suited for students interested in secondary school teaching or for entering medical school, and the BS is an excellent route to graduate school in the sciences and engineering or to professional schools." Added Dr. Lori Zaikowski, Chemistry Department Chair, "A bachelor's degree in Chemistry is a gateway to many interesting employment opportunities. Chemists are in high demand for a variety of jobs, and command good salaries."
Coursework is enhanced by opportunities through internships, independent study, research, and special topics courses. Students conduct research at Dowling or with our collaborating partners such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, the National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and other governmental, academic, civic and industrial partners.
"At Dowling, students learn chemistry in small classes and work closely with faculty members on research projects," said Dr. S. Russell Seidel, Assistant Professor of Chemistry. "Dowling also offers an array of modern instrumentation, and unlike at many larger institutions, undergraduates don't just admire these devices from a distance, they operate them directly."
The new Chemistry degrees at Dowling complement existing programs in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Earth Science, Computer Science, and Mathematics. To help reach their career goals, students may take advantage of Dowling's Pre-health Professional Program, Teacher Certification Program, Business Program, and Career Services Office.
Financial aid and scholarships are available. Specifically, students who pursue New York State teacher certification in science or math are eligible to apply for the National Science Foundation Dowling Noyce Scholarship for $10,000 per year for their last two years of full-time undergraduate study. Applications are available at www.dowling.edu/noyce and will be reviewed beginning in April 2005 for the 2005-06 academic year. Additionally, The American Chemical Society sponsors a scholarship program for qualified applicants who want to enter the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or other chemically related fields.
