History Of Oakdale Now Online Via Dowling College Library

This image of the original wooden Tudor style "Idle Hour" mansion, built in 1878 and destroyed by fire in 1899, is among several photos included in the new "Historic Oakdale" site.
Images from the late 1800s to the mid 20th century that capture the rise of the great estates along Long Island's South Shore and the development of Oakdale can now be accessed by the public via a new website created by the Dowling College Library.

"Historic Oakdale", which can be accessed at: http://www.dowling.edu/library/digital/index.htm is a collection of digitized postcards and photographs drawn from the holdings of Dowling College Library's Archives and Special Collections.

The Dowling College Library Digitization Committee began the project in January, 2004 and seeks to expand the images and information contained on the site. "We plan to work with faculty in our School of Education to create lesson plans to encourage local school teachers to utilize the site in their lessons on local history," said Chris Kretz, Reference Librarian/Project Manager.

The online collection includes 56 images, including many postcards written by employees of the Vanderbilts at the turn of the last century. All of their messages have been transcribed and saved along with the postcard image. Images include both William K. Vanderbilt "Idle Hour" mansions (the original which was destroyed by fire in 1898 and the existing house built in 1900), the Bourne Mansion (the former La Salle Military Academy now owned by St. John's University), St. John\'s Episcopal Church, Montauk Highway Filling Station, and South Side Sportsmen's Club.

"Historic Oakdale" was created in conjunction with the Long Island Library Resources Council (LILRC) Regional Digitization Program's "Long Island Memories". Dowling is one of 17 libraries on Long Island involved with the project, which was initiated to properly preserve and document historic images of Long Island and ensure free and open public access to these resources.

Anyone interested in donating Oakdale area images for the online collection are encouraged to contact Chris Kretz at 631-244-3397 or E-mail.
