Third and fourth grade students from Terryville Elementary School in Port Jefferson Station met award-winning artist and author Faith Ringgold at a recent presentation and book signing at Dowling College. Students from the classes of Ms. Scott, Mrs. Leser, and Ms. Zagaria displayed their own Ringgold-inspired artwork at the event and toured an exhibition of Ms. Ringgold's work at the College's Anthony Giordano Gallery.

Best known for her painted story quilts - art that combines painting, quilted fabric and storytelling - Ringgold has written and illustrated eleven children's books. Her first book, "Tar Beach", was a Caldecott Honor Book and winner of the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration.

As an active proponent in both the Black and Women' s movements in the 1970s, Ringgold has drawn on her African-American heritage and feminism, both in terms of subject matter and artistic techniques in ways that have raised awareness and appreciation of the diversity that defines American culture.

A native New Yorker, Ringgold is the recipient of more than 75 awards, fellowships and honors, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Fellowship for painting, and seventeen honorary doctorate degrees. Her work has been exhibited in major museums throughout the world and is in the permanent collections of such prominent institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
