Virtual Systems Laboratory
Located at the National Aviation Technology Center at Dowling's Brookhaven Campus, the laboratory houses a dedicated computer-based multi-media facility. In addition to extensive video/data imaging capability, the core system is a Raytheon Corporation Air Traffic Control Simulation Training System, called FIRSTplus. The system comes equipped with a host of high resolution monitors as well as voice recognition, communications and recording capabilities. This simulator consists of a three-dimensional air traffic control tower cab, a three position radar room, and a six position pseudo pilot room.
The Virtual Systems Laboratory provides the student with an understanding of the National Airspace System through the use of air traffic control. It will develop the student's knowledge in the fields of regulations, procedures, and publication while developing skills in phraseology, vectoring, clearances, and speed control.
The laboratory will also provide hands-on experience in pilot oriented crew resource management and broad-based aviation crew resource management.
The laboratory will focus on communication skills between pilots, air traffic controllers, airport, airline, and aircraft rescue and fire fighting operators during normal and emergency operations. The Virtual Systems Laboratory is available to aviation and non-aviation students alike, who wish to broaden their knowledge of the National Airspace System.
