Certificate Programs:
Integrated Emergency Management Course Synopsis

What is Integrated Emergency Management (Our Vision): IEM is an innovative, dynamic system designed to streamline operations and maximize effectiveness, thus optimizing efficiencies overall in disaster management. Specifically, we seek to create an environment through which similar and dissimilar entities can more effectively communicate and more cohesively collaborate to boldly ensure the timely and efficient handling of disasters, whenever and wherever they occur.

Intent: To significantly increase the Situational Awareness (SA) and response skills of local emergency management agencies by offering relevant, in-depth courses created and taught by some the nation's most notable Subject Matter Experts (SME). Additionally, to meet the needs of the local community and provide additional incentive for police, fire, emergency service, health care, and other personnel. A Certificate of Competency will be issued upon course completion.

Certification: Dowling College, an accredited institution from the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, New York State Department of Education (DOE), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), will present participants who complete one of four course tracks with a Certificate of Competency for their efforts in completing this rigorous program.

Methodology: Participants will attend one or more of four course tracks for two consecutive weekends. The first two days of each course will be academic in nature and provide participants with enough specific knowledge to test online for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Independent Study courses IS-700, National Incident Management System - An Introduction and/or IS-800, National Response Plan - An Introduction. The second two-day period will involve real-world case studies and evaluation exercises in our Virtual Systems Laboratory™. Evaluations will be conducted by SME in a "correct to 100%" environment using our Virtual Systems Laboratory™. The software used will provide "customized" rather than "canned" outcomes through the use of algorithmic-based physics formulas. Our goal is to have participants learn from both positive and negative experiences during the simulation phase; in each case, heightening their IEM knowledge.

Eligibility: To be eligible for each of the four tracks, participants must be current or previous members of the emergency management community or other target groups listed.
