In addition to the \“Hour of Honor\” event held recently on our
Brookhaven campus, which recognized the remarkable contributions of the
Tuskegee Airmen, Dowling’s Black History Month events throughout
February 2008 included featured speakers Dr. Melvin Douglass, African
artifacts curator Gene Peters, Def Jam founder Bruce George, storyteller
Frances Watkins and a performance by Boncelia Lewis. The Dowling
College Spoken Word Club and Overdrive Dance Project were among our
student performers. The final event, featuring a full range fashion
show that incorporated African garments as well as urban and evening
wear, was a well attended, celebratory occasion.
We wish to thank Dr. Kevin Jordan, Ms. Lizette Washington, students
Jessica Toussaint, Dominique Rodriguez and Kelvin King for their efforts
behind the scenes which brought us a month of memorable and significant
events, as well as the Student Government Association and the Center for
Minority Teacher Development and Training for their sponsorship.
