They are doing basic observations to determine which of the 32 species of seahorses these belong to assess their interactions with local eel grass, red algae and another local species of pipefish acquired from Moriches and Great South Bays. Great care has been given to creating an estuarine environment comparable to that from which they came. The different elements of their new "Dowling" home were acquired from the Great South Bay by Marine Science staff and students. • Dowling Spearheads FDA Petition
Dowling College President Robert Gaffney and Adelphi University President Robert Scott have joined with Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Inc. (LIAAC) in a petition drive seeking changes to the Food and Drug Administration's blood donor policy. Current FDA policy prohibits gay men from donating blood during their entire lifetimes, regardless of health status.
The petition seeks to have FDA policy changed to a twelve-month waiting period since last homosexual contact rather than a lifetime ban.
President Gaffney feels that "The sufficiency of our available blood supply is a constant concern. By prohibiting those gay men who are HIV-negative and AIDS-free from donating blood during their entire lifetimes, the FDA ban exacerbates blood shortages we regularly experience."
According to Dr. Gail Barouh, President and CEO of LIAAC, "Great advances have been made in HIV testing, and as standard practice all donations are screened for HIV as well as hepatitis, syphilis and other factors."
Dowling's Dr. Bill Thierfelder was instrumental in meetings with LIAAC, Long Island Blood Services and President Gaffney that resulted in the current petition drive.
LIAAC representatives will be present during Dowling's Oct. 29th blood drive with the petition available. Signatures are also being collected electronically through http://www.dowling.edu/fdapetition/ where the full text of the petition can be read.
