Professional Development School Presents at Conference

Members of Dowling College's first Professional Development School (PDS) presented research, issues and concerns surrounding their PDS at the NAPDS conference in Las Vegas. The presentation was entitled "Two Sides of the Same Coin: Advancing a "Developing" PDS. PDSs are similar to "teaching hospitals" in the medical profession in that they are innovative models that have as their goals the preparation and continuing education of quality teachers, the enhancement of student learning and research. After 7 years of formal contracts and over 35 collaborative projects and research directed by Dr. Linda A. Catelli, Dowling College and the North Babylon School District signed a partnership agreement for the Belmont Elementary School to become Dowling's first PDS. The presentation by the first PDS Team was a great success. As commented by Dean Leonard Soroka of a University in Pennsylvania it was the "best session" he had attended at the conference! Congratulations to all involved. Following the successful presentation at the NAPDS Conference in Las Vegas in March, Dr. Linda A. Catelli carried the work and research to the prestigious 2007 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). She was invited as a featured speaker in a two-day AERA workshop entitled "A Developmental Approach to Research on Professional Development Schools." Over 14,000 researchers and educators from around the world attended the annual meeting in Chicago. Dr. Catelli also presented at another session entitled "The Many Faces of School-University Collaborative Research"
