Costa Rica - Learning Beyond the Classroom

In January, Dowling College went on a trip led by D. John T. Tanacredi, Chairman of the Department of Earth and Marine Sciences, with sixteen students and several public participants to Costa Rica, the land between two oceans. Participants went along for the eco-tour and took advantage of the fact that four courses were being run where students were able to get up to 12 credits in this intense 4 week Winter Session course program!
The whole environment was the classroom, from the moment the group woke up. They spend the majority of their time in the rainforests, and the group was also impressed by the volcanoes that they saw. Sherri Eisenberg, who is an Earth Science major going for her BA exclaims, "We could even feel the ground moving and hear the cinders cracking and we caught a glimpse of the lava flowing". The group felt that they "went in as students, and came out as ecologists". They also went on a crocodile cruise where the crocodiles were two feet from the boat! Anyone on campus can see a detailed display in our library which covers the entire trip and the great job the students did in learning about tropical ecology.
Don't forget to get your snorkeling gear together for the next trip to Belize!
