  • Holiday Medley Earlier this month music students from Dowling performed a medley of seasonal pieces for the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Ross Health Care Center in Brentwood. In addition to performing a number of solo pieces the Dowling students also accompanied the Brentwood High School select chorus.   • International Visitor
    Mr. Xiao Ping (Bob) Xu, Director of the Board at New Oriental Education & Technology Group in China recently visited President Gaffney and toured the campus. Mr. Xu is the co-founder of New Oriental School, which is the largest provider of private educational services in China. Their wide range of educational programs, services and products includes English training, which can help in preparing Chinese students to attend college in America. At the invitation of Dr. Kuan Yang, Mr. Xu met with Dr. H. E. Broadbent and Yu-wan Wang, and discussed the possibilities of an international exchange between Dowling College and New Oriental. Photo
  • Alum Returns To Share International Experience Dowling alum Kenneth Holm Cortsen recently visited campus to speak with Dr. Marilyn Mather's Sport Leadership and Sport Management classes. Ken teaches at the Institute of Applied Management in his native Denmark. He described for students the sports industry in Denmark, including the club structure of athletics. Read more.
  • Following the True Life Ministries' Bible study in Brookhaven, the club visited the elderly at Little Flowers Nursing Home on December 6th.
    The Christian club's Faith choir sang Christmas carols and gospel songs. "We are excited about this opportunity to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe the last, least and lost will become the first, most and found through the power of the Holy Spirit. An elderly lady accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior which makes us feel that we've accomplished our goal. We certainly contributed to kingdom-building" says Kelvin King, the club's president.

  • Fiesta Provides Warmth of the Season Singer, Santa's Helper and Professor Sal Dionisio serenaded his Spanish class at a special in-class breakfast on December 7th. Sal's end-of-semester tradition is a favorite of students and staff members, who are invited to attend. Sal impressed his audience by reciting his famous Christmas poem, and sang some holiday tunes, in addition to a unique rendition of "The Woodpecker Song". Photo

  • Thanks To All Who Helped To Celebrate The Success Of The Men's Soccer And Women's Volleyball Teams! Dowling athletes, staff, faculty, and fans were happy to celebrate the illustrious accomplishments of the Men's Soccer Team and Women's Volleyball teams last week in the Ballroom. Congratulations again to Dowling's Men's Soccer team, who made history by capturing the NCAA Division II National Championship, the first national title in any sport in the history of the college. Congratulations also to Dowling's Women's Volleyball team, which dominated its competition this season and advanced to the Elite Eight for the second consecutive season. Photos.
  • Dowling Hosts Tastes of Oakdale Recently the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual event, "A Taste of Oakdale", a wonderful evening filled with good food and music. Thank you to Vicki Kuhn for organizing it! Some of the local restaurant participants included McGovern*s, Viva La Vida, Tai Show East, The Bagel Doctor, The Snapper Inn, and the Riverview.   • Looking Toward 2020 From the Tip of Brooklyn to the Tip of Montauk Recently, members of the Graduating Senior Class and the Department of Earth and Marine Sciences hosted the Long Island Eco-Summit III-2006. A presentation on energy alternatives for Long Island by Dr. Lee Koppelman, Center for Regional Policy Studies, was among the highlights. The event also featured workshops and panel discussions on other hot-button Long Island environmental issues such as wetland loss, sea level rise, water quality, wildlife conservation, and land use. The region's leading researchers discussed their work in these and other areas, and various preservation initiatives were reviewed. A tour of Dowling's Kramer Science Center's Coral Reef and Horseshoe Crab Conservation Laboratories and event orientation was given by Dr. John T. Tanacredi, Chairman of Dowling's Department of Earth and Marine Sciences. Participants were welcomed by New York State Assemblywoman Ginny Fields. Photos.
  • Oval Office Lecture Recently, The Dowling College Department of History presented an insightful talk by William Doyle, author of Inside the Oval Office: The White House Tapes from FDR to Clinton. The award-winning author and expert on U.S. presidential history, political conventions, and American politics presented excerpts of secret White House recordings and his book. The presentation included information about FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, and Nixon. The author also revealed the "Top 10 clips", a description of the details and background of each recording system, and a discussion of why and how each President used the recording system. Photos.
  • Men’s Soccer Brings Home Dowling’s First National Championship Dowling College's men's soccer team made history on Saturday, November 18th, capturing the NCAA Division II National Championship, the first national title in any sport in the 51-year history of the college. The Golden Lions (22-0-2) had to withstand a furious rally from defending champion, No. 2-ranked Fort Lewis (21-2-1) down the stretch but held on to win 1-0. More.

  • A Medieval Moment Brought to You by The Honors Program On Saturday, November 11th an intrepid group of Honors Freshmen trekked way uptown in Manhattan to immerse themselves in the art and architecture of the High Middle Ages, housed in the collection of that most splendid museum, The Cloisters. They were accompanied by their Professor, Dr. Stephen Lamia, a former employee of the museum, and Ms. Maryann Campagno, Faculty & HRIS Specialist and Chaperone of the Honors Program Expeditionary Learning Experience.   • Dr. Rispoli's Class Constructs a Model Truncated 120-Cell A multi-dimensional model of a truncated 120-cell was recently constructed by many participants. This model was constructed under the guidance of Professor George Hart from SUNY Stony Brook by the Dowling Mathematics Club and Professor Rispoli's Discrete Mathematics class on October 25, 2006. The model required roughly 4 hours to build. This hands-on group construction of a large model was designed to expand students' geometric thinking.   • #1 Dowling Advances To The Quarterfinals The Golden Lions shut out the Eagles of Lock Haven, 4-0, in the second round of the NCAA Men*s Soccer Championship and remain undefeated with a 20-0-1 overall record. Dowling advances to the quarterfinals where they take on the Owls of Southern Connecticut. Lock Haven came out strong in the first half, pressuring the Golden Lions' defense and firing two quick shots on goalkeeper Billy Grady (Centereach, NY) in the opening minutes of the game. However, the game would remain scoreless until the 34th minute when Dowling tallied three quick goals in less than 10 minutes. Read more.
  • Humanitarian Club Leads Fight Against Leukemia and Lymphoma Recently, the Humanitarian Club, La Familia, Commuter Council, SGA, and Alumni Council joined together at Citibank Park for Light the Night. Light the Night supports the fight against Leukemia, Lymphoma and blood cancers. The Dowling College team*s efforts helped them to raise over $3,400. All who attended had an amazing time and were touched to see just how many people struggle with or support the fight.   • What may be the longest road trip in sports history is close to an end. This week the roar of bulldozers marked initial work on a series of athletic fields at Dowling College’s Brookhaven Campus in Shirley, meaning that a home field advantage for the College’s athletics teams - nearly 40 years in the making - will become reality in just a few months. The $12.5 million initiative includes the building of a multi-purpose stadium and a baseball and softball complex. The Golden Lions men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse, baseball and softball teams are all expected to take the field in spring, 2007. During the next few months 12 acres of land will be cleared and leveled. Photos.
  • Dowling CEC Students Are Special Volunteers On Sunday, October 24, students from Dowling College's Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) volunteered at the annual fall adapted games at Stony Brook University. Athletes competed in ten different adapted games. Student from CEC volunteered at the Olympic Village where they did arts and crafts with the athletes after they competed.   • Thanks To All For Supporting The Pre-Law Society's Coat Drive The Pre-Law Society would like to thank everyone who contributed coats and jackets to their successful coat drive. The total number of coats and jackets that were collected exceeded 120 (a more accurate count was not available due to donations that were made after the deadline) and were distributed to various charitable organizations on Long Island, including Big Brothers and Sisters. A large number of people will be warmer this fall and winter due to the gracious gifts of coats and jackets by the Dowling College Community.

    On Saturday, October 14th, a number of Dowling Honors Program students embarked on an expeditionary learning experience to the New York Botanical Garden in The Bronx, where the colorful and fantastic glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly were installed.   • Business Club Members Volunteer At Annual Conference The Business Club(ASE) recently volunteered at the 33rd Annual Conference of the Northeast Business & Economics Association on October 12-14, 2006. The conference took place at the Dansford, located at the heart of historic Port Jefferson. The NBEA conference provided a forum for a wide range of papers addressing all areas of business, economics, and information systems. All students are welcome to join Dowling's Business Club.   • Learning To Look: Honors Students Take in NYC On Saturday, September 30th, students enrolled in the Freshman Honors Seminar, VIS 1080: Learning to Look, undertook an architectural walking tour of Lower Manhattan guided by Dr. Stephen Lamia, the Instructor for this course and the Director of the Honors Program. Among the sites visited were City Hall, Trinity Church and the Woolworth building. This expeditionary learning experience concluded with an invigorating walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. Photos
  • Restoration Committee Honored The Restoration Committee recently held a luncheon to celebrate Tom Green's leadership of the Restoration Committee and their many accomplishments over the years. Tom is moving to Virginia and will be missed by his many friends at the College. The Restoration Committee shop has been closed due to the changing nature of the antiques and collectibles business. Until recently, the Committee's primary means of supporting the restoration of the mansion and grounds have been the consignment shop and auctions. Read more.
  • Autumn Honors Brunch Ms. Pam Brown, Director of the Anthony Giordano Art Gallery, hosted the autumn business brunch for students in the Honors Program on Sunday, October 8th. Surrounded by the nautically inspired sculpture of Arden Scott, the major topic of discussion was community service. Ms. Candice Zurawski, a third-year Honors student and Coordinator of Community Services for the Honors Program, together with Mr. Shivon Roach, another third-year Honors student and a member of the Honors Advisory Council, presented a variety of worthwhile projects in which Honors students might wish to commit themselves.   • Hispanic Heritage Night La Familia hosted Hispanic Heritage Night 2006, a night consisting of various performances, many speakers, a DJ, and food. The advisor of the group, Professor Salvatore Dionisio, made an announcement celebrating the people of the various Hispanic groups. The guest speaker of the night was Hiram Monserrate. Read more.
  • Wyandanch 8th Graders Gear Up For College Dowling College hosted College for a Day for a group of 8th grade students from the Milton L. Olive Middle School. This event is part of Dowling's GEAR UP program which will be following this cohort of students through their high school graduation from the Wyandanch School District with the mission of increasing college attendance.   • Superintendents and Presidents Come to Dowling Dowling recently hosted the Superintendents/Presidents Task Force in the Fortunoff Hall Ballroom. Under the auspices of the LIWorks Coalition and the LIRCHE, a group of Long Island College Presidents and school district Superintendents met to address issues relating to the difficulties they encounter in attracting a top-quality workforce.   • Dowling Professors To Present On Changing Role of School Boards Dr. Albert Inserra and Dr. Robert Manley, Associate Professors of Educational Administration at Dowling College and Dr. Melissa Burak, Assistant Superintendent of Finance, Lynbrook Public Schools and Dr. Anthony Mauro, Principal of Hiawatha Elementary School, Sachem CSD have accepted an invitation to present a 75-minute workshop at the National Association of School Boards Conference for April 14-17, 2007 in San Francisco. They will address the issue of the "Changing Role of School Board Members in the United States" as part of NSBA's Meet the Experts Program.

Dowling's crew teams and members of the Connetquot River Rowing Association are thrilled to launch from a new dock, recently installed by Dowling Rowing coaches Frank Pizzardi and Peter Lee.   • Phi Delta Kappa sponsored a presentation by Dr. Susanna Grannis, Executive Director of Children Affected by HIV-AIDS (CHABHA). CHABHA is a non-profit organization working in Africa to provide educational and support services to children affected by HIV/AIDS. On September 28, Dr. Grannis and her husband discussed their experiences working to improve the lives and futures of these children and their families. They informed the audience of CHABHA*s two major purposes: to raise awareness about the plight of children in Africa affected by HIV/AIDS and to raise support for projects there. Photo
  • Take Us Out To The Ball Game! More than 150 Dowling employees, family and friends enjoyed watching the Long Island Ducks play the Camden RiverSharks on Saturday night, September 23rd. A spectacular Grucci fireworks show capped off the evening. Unfortunately, most of the fireworks during the game were supplied by the Camden lineup, who blasted the birds by a score of 12-7. The highlight for the Ducks was the performance of former Dowling star Greg Connors, who had three hits, including a 2-run homer. More photos..

  • Happy Birthday To Peg! Corporal Peg, our beloved canine security officer, recently celebrated her sixth birthday. Peg, who came to Dowling in February 2002 to chase away unwanted Canadian Geese, was feted with extra cookies and some new stuffed animals. She was on duty that day also, which Peg considers another gift. Says handler Debbie Davidson, "Peg enjoys working. She loves it at Dowling." Photo.

He is speaking on Competition in Youth Sports Satisfying the Interests of Parents and Children.   • Entering students and their parents visited both Dowling campuses this week for new student orientation. Events were held for undergraduate and graduate evening students on Tuesday, August 29 in Oakdale, freshmen and transfer students on August 31st in Oakdale, and for freshmen and dorm students on September 1st at the Brookhaven Campus. It was a great time to meet fellow students, learn about the many services and organizations available, and to take care of some necessities, like obtaining an ID card and parking permit.   • Dowling Student Teacher Supervisor Inducted Into Hall of Fame Robert Kersch, a Field Supervisor of Student Teachers, has been inducted into the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. This year's class consisted of six inductees. Mr. Kersch was the only Long Islander honored. Selected for his many contributions to interscholastic officiating, Mr. Kersch has served as the Referee for the State Championships (B) in Swimming and Diving for the past 10 years and has officiated at the state meet for 41 years. A past president of both the Long Island and New York State Swimming Officials Association, he has served as the New York State high school swimming and diving rules interpreter since 1977. He has served on the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Diving All America selection committee and is the Empire State Games Diving Chairperson. Bob also is a boys' interscholastic soccer official in Suffolk County. The Outstanding Competitor Award, given to the top high school boys' soccer player from a large Suffolk County high school, in named the Kersch Award in his honor. Mr. Kersch also has an extensive sports announcing background and has been a diving announcer for the Big East Championships, the Ivy League Championships, the World University Games and the NCAA Division 1 Championships for both Men and Women. On several occasions he has also announced the United States National Synchronized Swimming Championships as well as serving on the Diving Secretariat Staff for the Diving World Cup and the Olympic Games. A former teacher, coach, principal and Assistant Superintendent in the Lindenhurst Schools, Mr. Kersch has been working with Dowling education students for nearly a decade. Photo
  • International Outreach At the invitation of Yu-wan Wang, Hsiao-hung Nancy Chen, former Dean of the College of Social Sciences, National Chengchi University in Taiwan, recently toured campus and met with key administrators to discuss the possibilities of an international exchange program between the two schools. Chen, who is currently a Professor of Sociology at National Chengchi University, earned her Ph. D. from University of Pittsburgh in the area of Economic & Social Development in 1977. She has been awarded as the best Teacher by the Ministry of Education and granted a Fulbright visiting scholarship to the University of Chicago and National Science Council Grant to the University of Oxford. In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Chen serves extensively as social policy consultant to various Taiwanese governmental committees, NGOs and APEC as well. Photo

  • A Summer of Science Students from Dowling's Center for Minority Teacher Development & Training participated in the Summer Science Camp at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Science Learning Center for six weeks during July and August. Current and incoming Dowling students Olivia Bennett, Aleatra Eleazer, Donille Murray, Kyeshiann Selvyn, David Shell, and Diana Toussaint worked as teacher interns under the supervision of the Science Learning Center Educators.   • Book's Tale: No Substitute For Experience Cliff Satriano, an administrator in the Higher Education Opportunity Program office, has written a book called, "Some Say Fire, Some Say Ice: The Dirt on Secondary Substitute Teaching". It covers everything a substitute needs to know about different subject areas, the periods of the day, and myriad circumstances only a substitute teacher would come across.   • We Know What You Did This Summer Dr. Bill Thierfelder, Associate Professor of English, has enjoyed a busy summer. Two of his books have been published by Booksurge: Ten (a collection of parables, fables, and fantasies) and a collection of poems called How The Dinosaurs Devoured The Humans. Both are currently available at amazon.com, borders. com, and other major online bookstores. Bill also recently announced the creation of "The Matthew Shepard-Sakia Gunn Scholarship" here at the College to assist qualified first-year gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender students. Bill also has been training daily for the Second Annual Journey for Safe Spaces, his solo bike trek from Montauk to Bay Shore (153 kilometers) to raise funds for LIGALY (Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth). He will undertake a "mini" version of the trek from Dowling's Shirley Campus to Oakdale on Wednesday, Sept. 27 as a fund raiser for both LIGALY and for the Shepard- Gunn Scholarship. The full-length trek will take place on Oct. 13 and 14.

  • New NYC Play Has Dowling Connection "I Coulda Been a Kennedy", a play by former Dowling Drama department adjunct professor Dennis Trainor, Jr. will premiere at the Players Theatre (115 MacDougal Street, NYC) from August 11th through 26th.   • In The Swim This is the third summer in a row that Dowling students have enrolled in the special topics course "Whales of New York". This year nine students (including 2 high school students) took the summer session II class and witnessed whales on Jeffrey's Ledge in Massachusetts and a group of 60 common dolphins in the waters southeast of Montauk. The course is taught by Arthur H. Kopelman, Ph.D., President, Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, an Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Earth and Marine Sciences. Photo.

  • Yu-wan Wang Awarded Fulbright Scholarship Yu-wan Wang, Director of International Student Services, has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship in the U.S.-Germany International Education Administrators Program. As a representative of the U.S. in Germany, Yu-wan will help fulfill the principal purpose of the Fulbright Program, which is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the people of representing more than 150 countries that currently participate in the program.   • On a Roll For Team USA Greg Thompson, son of Linda Thompson, of the School of Education, will be representing the USA for the second year in Men's World Roller Hockey. Team USA will play in Detroit this coming week against various teams from around the world.
    Greg is an accomplished roller hockey player, who has been participating in the game for 13 years. He has been named MVP, and has been voted to the All American Team for the past 3 years for the National College Roller Hockey League. Greg is currently in his senior year at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. When not playing hockey, Greg spends his time coaching local travel and out-of-state high school roller hockey teams.   • Dr. Kevin D. Jordan Named Dean of Academic Support Services Kevin, who recently marked 20 years of service to Dowling, will continue in his role as Assistant Director of HEOP. Kevin is an ordained Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.   • Two New Titles For Ronnie MacDonald Congratulations to Ronnie MacDonald, who has been named Dean of Students. Ronnie, who has worked in various roles at Dowling since graduating in 1980 with a B.A. in Music Education, was also recently named president of the Long Island Council of Student Personnel Administrators. Ronnie has long been active in LICSPA, which represents 19 colleges and universities on Long Island.     The Dowling Family once again answered the call with $1,000 in total donations this spring in support of Cystic Fibrosis research. The campaign was led by Nancy Miller, from Dowling's Business & Finance Department, whose three-year-old niece Danielle suffers from the disease.

  • Amazing Grad Tells Of Amazing Race
    Al Rios, who competed in season #4 of the hit CBS show "Amazing Race" recently visited Dowling's Enrollment Services Office. Al, who earned a B.S. in Special Education at Dowling in 1996, provided many interesting stories of his trek around the globe during the 2003 Emmy-award-winning show. Al graduated from Ringling Bros. Clown College and worked as a clown for several years. He recently accepted a full-time position as a Special Education teacher at Eastern Suffolk BOCES, where he had been employed as a substitute teacher. Photo

  • Dowling College Celebrates 44th Commencement
    Dowling College celebrated its 44th commencement on Sunday, May 21st at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. Family and friends filled the seats to witness more than 900 graduates receive their bachelor's master's and doctoral degrees. Roger Tilles, New York State Regent for Long Island, delivered the commencement address and received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Also receiving honorary degrees were media executive Felipe Luciano and community leaders Robert Buescher, Janet Buescher, and Joseph Verderber.     This May, eighteen pre-service teachers in secondary science had the distinction of becoming the first college students from Dowling College to receive training and a certificate from the GLOBE Program. Hart, a Professor at Stony Brook University, to build a series of polytope projection models, including simplexes, hypercubes, and the 120-cell.     Dowling welcomed alum Dr. Donald Gilzinger ('69) to campus for a presention of the life and works of his former professor, Aaron Kramer, who taught English at Dowling for over thirty years before his death in 1997. The talk, held on Wed., Feb. 15 focused on Jewish themes in Kramer's poetry, as well as his devotion to translating the works of Yiddish poets.   • Minority Teacher Center In Spotlight At National Meeting Last month, Lizette Washington and Dr. Clyde Payne traveled to San Diego, CA, to deliver an insightful presentation on Dowling’s Center for Minority Teacher Development at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) Annual Meeting. According to Dr. Payne, “Attendees were impressed by the way the Center has interacted with many different groups, including the Urban League, Adelante, Brookhaven National Labs, the Sweezey Foundation, school districts, etc. to bring about more minority participants in our School of Education programs.”

The graduation was attended by family, friends and faculty as well as individuals representing TFCU and Dowling College, including Robert Allen, President of TFCU, Dr. Albert E. Donor, President of Dowling, and Dr. Elana Zolfo, Vice President for Corporate Programs & Continuing Education for the Dowling Institute. Amitava Das, a faculty member in the Dowling Institute MBA program, delivered an inspiring address to his former students. Graduate Christopher J. Myers remarked on the preparedness and knowledge afforded through the MBA Program.   • Dowling Celebrates Poetry of Aaron Kramer
    Dowling welcomes alum Dr. Donald Gilzinger ('69) to campus for a presention of the life and works of his former professor, Aaron Kramer, who taught English at Dowling for over thirty years before his death in 1997. The talk, held on Wed., Feb. 15 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Hunt Room, will focus on Jewish themes in Kramer’s poetry as well as his devotion to translating the works of Yiddish poets.

  • Friends Celebrate Das, The Newlywed Amitava Das and his lovely wife Smita recently returned from India where they were married in traditional ceremonies. The happy couple honeymooned in Vienna before returning to the States. A reception was held on January 7 at the Riverview Restaurant for local friends. Smita is currently completing the final months of her internship towards her Psy.D. from Wright State University and will be joining him here in August. View photos
