Girl Scout Jr. Troop 1643, from the Bosti Elementary School in Bohemia, spent the afternoon learning to knit and crochet at a workshop held recently at the Dowling College Library. Christine Cesaria and Kami Convery, librarians at Dowling, volunteered to teach the girls how to knit and crochet during a two-hour session. The Girl Scout troop leader, Diana Palumbo, Circulation Assistant at the Library, thought of the idea so that the girls could learn a lifetime skill and at the same time earn a badge. So that the girls would be able to earn more than one badge, Christine and Kami, taught them how to make a 7'x9' square for use by "Warm Up America! (WUA!)". Warm Up America is a non-profit organization that joins the knitted/crocheted squares to make blankets for people in need. Kami said, "Once the girl scouts finish their squares, we send the squares to Warm Up America who will join them and donate them locally." Nine girls ranging in age from 8 years old to 11 years old attended the workshop along with both their troop leaders, Diana Palumbo and Kim Huhn.
In addition to working part time at Dowling College, Christine and Kami are working toward opening their own yarn shop; Unwind: A Knitting Café, LLC, where they would have the opportunity to teach their craft to adults and children. If you would like to learn to knit or crochet, you can contact Christine (cesariac@dowling.edu) or Kami (converyk@dowling.edu) in the library.
