|
Q: What is SEVIS?
A: SEVIS stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. The US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) has created this Internet-based system in order to maintain current information on nonimmigrant students, exchange visitors, and their dependents (i.e. all those in F or J visa status). SEVIS will track F and J visa holders from the time they receive their documents (I-20, visa, etc.) until they complete their programs. When fully operational, SEVIS will link with colleges and universities, US embassies and consulates, US ports of entry, the Department of State, and exchange visitor programs.
Q: Why is the USCIS creating SEVIS?
A: Institutions have been required by law for many years to keep records on F and J students. SEVIS has been created to comply with a 1996 federal law and to automate the collection of required data.
Q: Where can I find more information about SEVIS?
A: You may find additional information at the NAFSA SEVIS Information Site. It is designed for advisors and provides highly detailed explanations of the SEVIS system.
Q: The I-94 record listed is old. I have traveled outside the United States since that date and have received a new I-94 card. What should I do?
A: Please enter the information from your most recent I-94 card. Your most recent I-94 should currently be stapled into your passport.
Q: There are two numbers on my I-94 card. One is printed, the other is handwritten. Which should I use?
A: If the original printed number is crossed out and a new handwritten number is written beneath it, please use the handwritten number.
Q: My I-94 card does not have an expiration date. What should I enter in the "Expiration Date" field under "Verify I-94 Card Information?"
A: If your I-94 card is marked "D/S" (meaning "Duration of Status"), your I-94 card does not have an expiration date. Leave the fields blank. If your I-94 card does have an expiration date instead of "D/S", please contact the Dowling ISSO immediately.
Q: I am done with the SEVIS I-20 Data Verification. What do I do next?
A: Once you complete and file your SEVIS I-20 form, you do not need to do anything more. Our office will contact you either to ask you further questions or to notify you that your new SEVIS I-20 is ready.
Q: The program end date listed on my I-20 is coming soon, what do I do?
A: You must file for an extension before the "program end date" listed on your I-20. Contact International Student Services for a Program Extenstion Application.
