Subject: Dowling College Policy on Use of Email to Communicate With Students
Under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) the College is required to ensure that no personally identifiable information, other than directory information, is released without written consent. To comply with this law, it is College policy to use only the United States Postal Service and/or Dowling's own email system to communicate with students about academic and financial concerns. Students who wish to use third-party email services will be directed to set up their Dowling email with forwarding to their preferred account. This also ensures that students will get timely notice of enrollment deadlines and campus events.
When receiving requests for confidential information from outside email services, faculty and staff may only direct their response to the Dowling account. (There is no way to reliably associate an address like firstname.lastname@example.org with anyone.) Also, the Dowling email system is the only option that assures delivery when most email administrators have implemented stringent anti-spam measures, including blocking filters and spam-detection systems. It is impossible to guarantee the delivery of a message outside of our own systems.
The Technology @ Dowling section on the Dowling Intranet contains instructions that will help students to access their Dowling accounts. New students receive the same instructions at Orientation, and Academic Computing Lab staff are available for individual assistance whenever the Labs are open. Please encourage everyone in the Dowling community to utilize Dowling email for Dowling business: it's secure, reliable, private, safe and easy to use.
