The Center's goal is to increase diversity in the classroom by increasing the number of minority teachers.

This program falls within the priority of Scholarship Programs because we are developing and expanding the use of innovative and promising best practices for recruiting, selecting, serving, retaining, and building community among high-achieving students demonstrating financial need. This program enhances minority student achievement and aids in the development of a more diverse and better-educated work force. The Center targets Long Island students:

  • who are in high school, or
  • students attending Dowling College in the teacher education program or,
  • community college students who will transfer into Dowling's teacher education program.

Through the Dowling College program, we are providing high school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate students support services which include :

  • Academic tutoring by professionals and peers
  • Saturday on-campus workshops and seminars
  • Princeton Review SAT Preparation
  • ESL Instruction
  • Mentors within school
  • Job Shadowing opportunities
  • Pre-student teaching seminars/observations
  • Personal portfolio development
  • Future teacher seminars
  • Study skills assistance
  • Technology related career development/computer skills workshops
  • Financial aid, personal and family counseling
  • Cultural/educational events and trips
  • Career development activities: lesson plan development, public speaking, mock interviews, etc.
  • College assistance awards
  • NYS exam support services & certification assistance

The Dowling College Robert Noyce Scholarship Program, funded by the National Science Foundation, awards up to $10,000 per year for full-time students seeking teacher certification in mathematics or science. Dowling juniors and seniors are eligible for two-year scholarships, and graduate students are eligible for one-year scholarships.
