Debbie Starker (Actor) is a Dowling alum, class of '79, and began her theatrical career at the Oakdale campus as a member of the Idle Hour Gilbert & Sullivan Players, where she played every character lead from 1970-1979. She was the female vocalist for the college's blues/rock group Blu Doktor and also performed with the Alumni Theater in Antigone. Needless to say, she is absolutely thrilled to once again be performing at her alma mater after a 25 year hiatus! Since graduation, she has gone on to perform in all aspects of theater at virtually all of the regional theaters on Long Island. Her 30+ year theatrical career is highlighted by such wonderful and diverse roles as Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret, Bloody Mary in South Pacific, Mother Superior in Nunsense, Mother Miriam Ruth in Agnes of God, Nurse in Romeo and Juliet, Grandma Kurnitz in Lost in Yonkers, Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, Matron Mama Morton in Chicago, Boo Levy in Last Night of Ballyhoo, just to name some favorites. Besides performing, Debbie's recent directorial credits include Carousel, Rumors, Bermuda Avenue Triangle, Visiting Mr. Green, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, and Social Security. Debbie has also appeared in independent films, commercials, and has been a guest on Late Night Broadway and Local Lites on public access TV. She appeared with the Loft in the fall 2004 production of Euripides' Bacchae: The Disarmers, the spring 2004 production of Sam Shepard's True West as Mom. Her most cherished theater-related accomplishment is her newsletter, "Deb's Web," which is devoted to keeping the Long Island theater community connected and well informed. "Deb's Web" goes out each week to approximately 1300 readers whose common denominator is their love of Long Island theater.
