On this episode we are joined by Melissa Theodorakatos, president of the Dowling Gay-Straight Alliance, and Dr. Suzanne Johnson, professor of Psychology. Our topic is the college's new campaign to End the Hate. This is an educational initiative to address bullying at the college and adult level. During the podcast we discuss cyber-bullying and the negative consequences of social media services like FaceBook and Twitter. We also list places you can go to for help, both at Dowling and on Long Island.
The End the Hate campaign starts this fall at Dowling and will continue with a symposium on campus in spring 2012.

Dowling alumni Marc Rosen and James P. Wagner discuss the poetry anthology they co-edited, Perspectives: Poetry Concerning Autism and Other Disabilities. The collection, which includes contributions from Marc and James, provides a window into autism from those dealing with it in their lives: parents, children, students. Marc relates his expereinces growing up with autism, particularly with the school system, and offers some guidance to what has come to be known as autistic culture. We also talk about the role of the Internet in all of this, from both editor's experiences writing for theLong Island Examiner to the establishment of Local Gems Press.
As an interesting companion piece to this episode, you can also listen to our latest Research Leadership Learning podcast in which Dr. Rich Bernato, assistant dean of Dowling's School of Education, talks with Dr. Eric Shyman about the school's role in educating autistic students.
