November is election season, and with this display, the Library hopes to get out the vote. Books from the collection highlight the history of American politics, the development of political parties, and current topics influencing how we vote. Also included are informational pamphlets from the League of Women Voters.

Shipwrecks off Long Island

From the treacherous currents of Hellgate off Astoria, Queens to the stretch of the South Shore dubbed Wreck Valley, the waters off Long Island have long been known as dangerous and potentially deadly. This display, inspired by Newsday's web site Claimed by the Sea: Twenty Prominent Long Island Shipwrecks, contains books from the Library collection on famous sailing vessels that sank in the area as well as guides to wreck diving, underwater archaeology, and more.

1000 CE: First Millennium

March 2000 - May 2000

The image of medieval times as the "dark ages" is put to rest by the books in this display, which celebrates the cultural and artistic achievements of civilization in the year 1000 C.E. Items from the Library collection illustrate topics from the art of pre-Columbian societies to the craftsmen of Byzantium to the development of astronomy.

Newbery and Caldecott Award Winners

January 2000 - March 2000

Some of the finest examples of literature for children will be found in this display, which highlights past and present recipients of these two prestigious awards. The Caldecott Medal, presented annually since 1938, honors distinguished picture books, while the Newbery Medal, which dates back to 1922, is awarded to outstanding literature for children. Look for these books, and more, in the Library.
