Admissions Requirements

International students seeking admission to Dowling College must submit the following:

1. Application

  • Completed application for admission and application fee ($35 Undergraduate, $50 Graduate).   YOU MUST SELECT A MAJOR AREA OF STUDY!

  • You will also need to fill out an application for your I-20.  THIS FORM IS NOT AN APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO DOWLING COLLEGE!! Click here for SEVIS Application.

2. Documents required

The college requires that international students applying for admission must send Official or Notarized copies of the following documents. 

        For Undergraduate Applicants

        In addition to the Application for Undergraduate Admission we must receive:

  • Picture and name page of your passport
  • Bank statement showing that you have enough money available for your first year of study.  You will be required to show this at your visa interview. For the 2011-2012 school year this amount is about $40,000 USD.  If the bank statement is not in your name, you must also include a notarized statement of support from the owner of the bank account, promising to pay your expenses during your education.  You must also include certified proof of the sponsor’s income to show the ability to continue sponsorship during your entire degree program.
  • Proof of Immunization against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Meningitis.  Please read the information below about your immunization. 

    The Immunization form MUST be filled out by your physician and filed with our office so we can send your I-20 to you.  Immunizations taken BEFORE YOU WERE ONE (1) YEAR OLD ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

     

  • Your High School transcript with proof of graduation, along with a certified translation, if not in English.
  • At least one letter of recommendation.
  • A 250-500 word statement of purpose, discussing why you wish to come to college in the United States and what you hope to achieve.
  • If you have never attended any other college and you wish to be considered for an academic scholarship, you must take the SAT or ACT examination and have the scores sent to Dowling College.  
  • If you wish to be considered for an athletic scholarship, you must have your athletic coach contact our coach for your specific sport.

        Requirements For Graduate Applicants

       

        In addition to the Application for Graduate Admission we must receive:

               academic program with a copy of your Bachelor’s degree.

  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • A copy of your resume.
  • Additional documents as required by your specific program.

3. Educational Credentials
The International Student and Scholar Services Office requires either original documents or certified official copies of all transcripts with proof of diploma or degree. These records must be provided in English and/or professionally translated.

Dowling College does NOT require GMAT or SAT testing for admission to the undergraduate programs or the Masters in Business Administration (MBA). The Master of Science degree program in Environmental Biology does require the GRE for full admission to the program.  If you are applying as an undergraduate student and wish to receive credit for undergraduate courses you have taken at an international university you must request a Course-by-Course evaluation of your credit by going to the World Education Services website

(www.wes.org/apply) and requesting a Course-by-course evaluation.

4. TOEFL or IELTS or STEP-EIKEN or Pearson Test of English(PTE) - helpful to determine your proficiency level
These test your ability to use the English language in your studies. If you do not demonstrate proficiency in English, or do not take the test, we will ask you to enter our English as as Second Language (ESL) program before beginning your college courses. 5. SAT
If you are an undergraduate student and wish to be considered for a scholarship you must have your transcript evaluated by www.wes.org/apply, and should take the SAT examination.  If you have excellent high school grades and the SAT is not given in your country, please contact us about other scholarship opportunities. 6. Affidavit of Support
An original or certified copy of a current (within 6 months or the start of class) bank statement. If the statement is not in your name, you must include a Notarized affidavit of support document from your sponsor (the owner of the bank account) promising to pay the costs of your education and stay in the United States. The minimum amount of required is $40,000. If you are planning to bring dependents you must show additional financial support of $8,000 for your spouse and $6,000 for each child. YOU WILL NEED TO SHOW THESE BANK DOCUMENTS TO THE CONSULATE FOR OUR STUDENT VISA.

7. Transfer Students

Transfer students currently in the U.S. must submit copies of all I-20 forms previously issued. A Transfer Recommendation form (sent to you when you are accepted to Dowling College) must be filled out by an International Advisor at the school you are currently attending. Students who wish to transfer into Dowling College must submit all required documents mentioned above along with all immigration documents.

8. Non-Immigrant Visitor in the U. S.

If you are a non-immigrant visitor already in the U.S. using a B1/B2 visitor visa, you may not begin study at any institution without receiving a change of status to F-1 Student Visa. If you are admitted to Dowling, we can give you an I-20 Application for a Student Visa, you can return to your home country, and apply for the F-1 student visa. For further information, please contact Dowling’s International Student and Scholar Services Office.

9.  Immunization Records
A completed Immunization form is required before we can send your I-20 to you.  New York Public Law requires as a condition of your attendance at Dowling, that you demonstrate proof of immunization against meningitis, measles, mumps and rubella. The same law requires that Dowling College maintain a valid Certificate of Immunizations as part of your permanent student record and requires the college to prohibit your future attendance if you do not have the necessary immunization documents. Please have your doctor complete the Immunization form and send it along with your other application documents..

10.  Obtaining I-20 Form

Please allow sufficient time for the I–20 Form to be processed and mailed to you along with your Acceptance letter.

Once you receive your I-20, READ THE CONTENTS OF YOUR ACCEPTANCE LETTER CAREFULLY.  IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOU!! Make arrangements to visit or make an appointment with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country. Bring the I-20 along with your acceptance letter, Notarized Affidavit of Support and bank statement.


11. After Your F-1 Visa is Approved

When you receive approval of your F-1 visa, please inform the Dowling College International Student and Scholar Services Office immediately.

Inform us of your scheduled arrival date in the United States. Please note: You may not arrive more than 30 days before the start date listed your I-20. Please make living arrangements accordingly.

12.  Applying for a space in our Dormitory

A $500.00 Dormitory Deposit is required by the Residence Life Office, to hold a room. This amount is NOT REFUNDABLE unless you do not receive your visa.  Space is limited so make your request as soon as you can.  If you are interested in living in Dowling College’s Residence Hall, you must reserve your space by completing an International Student application for residence.

Don’t assume that a room is reserved unless you have received confirmation of the reservation. Your application cannot be processed without the $500.00 deposit. Do not delay, space is limited.
