Christa McAuliffe Fellowships
These federally-funded fellowships are intended to enable and to encourage outstanding
teachers to continue their education; to develop innovative programs; to
consult with or assist local educational agencies, private schools or private school
systems; and to engage in other education activities that would improve their knowledge
and skills and the education of students.
Eligibility: Full-time public and private school teachers who are citizens or permanent
residents of New York State and who also teach in this state are eligible to apply
for fellowships. A teacher may receive a fellowship for a period of up to twelve months
and may not receive one for any two consecutive years. A fellowship recipient must
return to a teaching position in his or her local educational agency, private school or private
school system for at least two years following the completion of the fellowship.
Amount: The number and size of awards is determined annually by the Teacher
Education, Certification and Practice Board on the basis of federal allocations and numbers
of applicants.
Application: Applications may be obtained from superintendents of schools, heads of
non-public schools, presidents of local school district organizations, school personnel administrators,
the State Education Department or others and must be submitted to the State
Education Department’s Office of Teaching, Albany, NY, 12230 (518) 474-6440. The deadline
for submitting applications depends on federal action and varies from year to year.
