The Oliver B. Lerch, Jr. Scholarship

This scholarship is established by the faculty, friends, and family of Dr. Oliver B. Lerch, Jr., (anthropologist) in honor of his 17 years of service to Dowling College prior to his death. The Scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time senior who is majoring in one of the areas of the Social Sciences at Dowling College. An award of $350 will be made to the selected student during the final semester of the senior year. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize both outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian concern. The award will be based upon the following criteria:

  1. Applicant must be enrolled at Dowling College as a full-time, matriculated senior, majoring in an area of the Social Sciences (Anthropology-Sociology, Economics, History, Political Science, or Psychology).
  2. Applicant must have completed a minimum of 30 credits of course work at Dowling College (12 credits of which must be in 100-level course work in the major area).
  3. Applicant must be recommended for the award by the Lerch Scholarship Committee.
  4. Applicant must agree to be interviewed and/or prepare an essay should the selection process require such information.
  5. Should the Lerch Scholarship Committee determine that more than one student merits the award, the scholarship will then be divided among those recommended.
Candidates may nominate themselves for this scholarship or nominations may be made by faculty members in the Social Sciences.
