South Shore Estuary Watch
Sayville High School Students Bellport High School Students at a Wetland Restoration on Beaverdam Creek in Brookhaven
Seeks students and schools to participate in:
Water Quality Monitoring
(Chemistry: dissolved O2, salinity, nitrogen, phosphorous, chlorine, sulfide, metals, BOD, COD, etc.)
Biological Studies
(planktonic and benthic organisms, aquatic and terrestrial plant identification, entomology, physiological studies, effects of contaminants, nutrient transport in food chains, etc.)
Wetland Restoration and Studies
(comparison of disturbed vs. natural habitats, ornithology, entomology, botany, zoology, wetland restoration)
Stream Flow and Tidal Flushing Measurements
(characterize physical properties: quantify directions and rates of flow of fresh and salt water over the tidal cycle, determine salinity and temperature profiles, etc.)
Multiple Opportunities for Participation:
Student Clubs: Adopt-A-Stream Corridor/Adopt-A-Well/Adopt-A-Bay
Independent Study and Research Students
Class Projects in Environmental Science and Marine Sciences
Students in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science
New Interdisciplinary Course in L.I. Natural History and Science
May be modeled after the successful Sayville H.S. course which has offered multiple sections and was developed in collaboration with the Long Island Maritime Museum, South Shore Estuary Reserve Council, and Suffolk County.
Presentation of Projects at the annual Symposium
on the South Shore Estuary (and other science competitions)
Followed by a Clam Bake and free Canoeing on the Connetquot River at Dowling College.
Research Opportunities at Dowling College (and other institutions)
Access to scientific research equipment and supplies.
Opportunity to work with college students and faculty in Chemistry in Action, funded by the Dorr Foundation.
