Joan Boyle is professor of philosophy specializing in theories of metaphor, philosophy of time and aging, Eastern philosophy and death and dying. Some of her publications include:

  • a book titled The Mirror of Time, co-authored with her husband James Morriss
  • numerous journal articles on language, medicine, ethics and poetry. Selected titles:

Among her community service projects are:
  • 16 years volunteer service on board of advisors for Radio for Peace International, a shortwave/real audio station in Costa Rica
  • Three college courses written and produced for University of the Air, broadcast worldwide as a form of free college education on special issues regarding global peace and ethics issues
  • Almost completed 24 segments for University of the Air entitled The Story of Buddhism
  • Has produced several series of radio programs for FIRE on international feminist topics
  • Produced a five hour radio series titled Profiles of Chinese Women as a field experiment in China connected with the World Conference on Women held in 1995 and the follow-up sessions at the UN in 2000.
  • Has produced 3 cable TV programs on medical ethics, grief / terminal illness and one on non- traditional students
  • Founded and served as faculty advisor (over 12 years) for OPEN, a non traditional student organization exploring important problems and benefits of students returning to college after work experience
  • Founded the Dowling College Meditation Circle, a group of staff/students/faculty, who have met over the past five years for meditation practice (using whatever method they chose.). For further information please send an e-mail.
  • Founded, and guided over 8 years a self-help group of cancer patients, Today is Yours, producing audio and visual materials for the education of patients and their families
  • Has worked at Nassau County Medical Center with her husband on a video series on communication problems with staff and medical professionals for Candlelighters, a group of parents of children who are terminally ill
