9th Annual Environmental Science Poster Competition and Symposium
on the South Shore Estuary
I cordially invite your students to participate in Dowling College's 9th Annual Environmental Science Poster Competition and Symposium on Wednesday, May 25, 2005. This competition is for students who have been engaged in environmental science research projects. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the day's activities will end at 3 p.m. Enclosed is an application, schedule and directions. There will be monetary awards and certificates for first, second, and third prizes and honorable mentions. The unique event is open to students, teachers, parents and members of the local community. Hence, it is an outstanding opportunity for your students to share their research with the scientific and local communities. Suffolk County Department of Health Service's Groundwater Simulator will be of interest to K - 12 teachers as well, and will be demonstrated at the Symposium. This year we are inviting limited number of science students to participate in the non-competition portion of symposium. There is a limited number of spaces available. They will attend Environmental Science Workshops on chemical instrumental analyses of water quality and biological laboratory analyses, and conduct investigations in our coral reef laboratory. We will also feature a special Teacher Workshop for teachers to learn about scientific instrumentation used in environmental science, and to learn from educators who have conducted environmental research with high school students. Lunch will be provided. Canoeing will allow participants to experience the South Shore Estuary. Teachers and students will have the opportunity to meet with scientists and other teachers and students interested in Environmental Science. I hope to see you and your students at the Symposium. It will be a valuable educational experience for all. Plan to have students arrive between 8-8:15 a.m. to set up their posters. Please assist us with determining approximate numbers of students and teachers who will participate by completing and returning the enclosed postcard as soon as possible. Sincerely, Lori A. Zaikowski, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Chemistry For more information contact Gina Ortolani Dowling College Oakdale, NY 11769
