Dr. Christopher Boyko, Chair and Associate Professor of Biology at Dowling College, was profiled in the April 25th Wall Street Journal article “Is That Buzz a Beyoncé Fly or a Lady Gaga Wasp?”
In the article, scientists comment and discuss the trend of naming newly discovered species after celebrities. Dr. Boyko has named new genera and species of crustaceans after animator Ray Harryhausen, “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, and in honor of “Peanuts” creator Charles M. Schulz. He has also named species after Yoda of Star Wars fame and for the killing curse of Harry Potter’s nemesis, Lord Voldemort.
