Dowling Graduate and Veteran Featured in Newsday

8/7/14 – Newsday has featured 2014 Dowling graduate and veteran, Steven Stryska in an article discussing the impact of recent events overseas in the news on our local veterans. Steven was a guest speaker for an event held at Dowling College on July 2nd, 2014 entitled “What’s up with Iraq? Checking in with the OEF/OIF/OND Veterans.”  The Dowling Veteran community had expressed a need for a forum to talk about their feelings of anger, frustration and disillusionment related to the recent upheaval in the Middle East. In response to their need, the Dowling Veteran’s Affairs Department and Counseling Department collaborated with the Long Island Military Health Alliance and the Joseph P. Dwyer Peer to Peer Project to provide a forum for all Long Island veterans. This forum proved to be an innovative and effective vehicle for the individuals to express themselves (in some cases for the first time) and begin to address the impact on their lives in a positive manner. Described by some as an “historical” event, Newsday recognized the significance of Dowling College’s pre-emptive action to address the unique needs of their veteran student population.
