Dowling Ed.D. Graduate given award from Stony Brook University Professional Development School

John_Coverdale[1]Ed.D. Graduate, Joh Coverdale, was selected to receive the 2015 Bentley Glass/Mortimer Kreuter Award for Excellence in Service to SPD. Dr. Bentley Glass was the Provost/Academic Vice President who established the School of Professional Development and Mortimer Kreuter was its first Dean. The award consists of the opportunity to address the graduates at the SPD Commencement Celebration among other things. The criteria for the award include superior contributions to SPD’s academic programs (inside and outside the classroom), and being a role model for students, especially with respect to lifelong learning.

This year, the SPD Commencement Committee received many nominations from students, faculty and staff, including three from students of Coverdale’s.

One student writes:

In the classroom, Professor Coverdale’s extensive knowledge of and passion for the Human Resource Management field comes through. He upholds students to the highest levels of commitment and integrity with respect to their studies and the HRM program. Further, he encourages his students to take on a greater role in additional worthwhile endeavors, such as becoming SHRM student members and participating in the SHRM Student Chapter. These opportunities enhance students’ educational experiences, and provide valuable skills students will take with them into their future careers. The students value Professor Coverdale’s opinions, look up to him as a mentor, and feel he truly cares about them.

Another added:

He is dedicated to the program and all aspects of it…He not only cares about his students, he also cares about helping Stony Brook build their reputation and help students …become the leaders of tomorrow.

Coverdale will be presented with the award at this year’s SPD Commencement Celebration, which will take place on Thursday, May 21, 2015, at 7:00 pm in the Student Activities Center Auditorium.
