Maria Lovejoy
One
of the many hats that Maria Lovejoy wears as Coordinator of Printing
and Duplicating is working directly with faculty, staff and students
to develop effective cost-efficient measures. In her quest for cost
efficiency, Maria has given considerable thought to how the Dowling
family could save on paper. It is no wonder that this eight-year
Dowling veteran is a past Dowling Pride Award recipient, as she goes
the extra mile. Maria is a pioneer in recycling paper -- or should
it be said, “reusing paper.” She turns our trash into
something useful.
How can the Dowling family join Maria’s bandwagon in saving on
paper and money? Maria contends that each department could have a
centrally located box where all non-confidential discarded paper is
placed. Bear in mind that, if the paper contains personal
information or is confidential, it should not be
recycled. Recycled paper should be wrinkle free, printed on one
side, with no staples or clips. The contents of the box may be sent
through inter-office mail to the Printing and Duplicating office;
it’s that simple.
How
else can we save paper and cost? There’s the old adage,
“Measure twice, cut once.” Maria applies this principle
to everyone who uses a computer. Proofread, proofread and again
proofread. How many times do we print out a document before
proofreading it and then have to toss it in the trash? It is a must
to proofread a document carefully, especially before sending it to
the Duplicating Department where large numbers of copies are made.
Besides proofreading, how many times is there an event for 200
people, but 300 copies are ordered just in case? Besides not
ordering more copies than needed, another way to save paper is to
print on both sides. “Double sided” copies may also be
made at the copy machine.
Now look in your trash! Did you print out a piece of
paper that may be reused? Don’t throw it away. Save it and
send it to Maria Lovejoy. Maria and her colleague, Mike Abcug, will
take it from there. They will sort, stack, glue, cut, and voilà:
scrap pads of all sizes! Why should Dowling spend money on pads when
we can order them from Maria on Extension 3432?
Maria is doing her part to help save the environment. Let’s
all join her!
