What Can You Do To Help?
Working at the Office or at Home:
- Avoid copying and printing whenever you can.
- Print double-sided copies.
Purchase and use recycled and chlorine-free paper products. Chlorine-free paper means paper that has not been bleached with chlorine. Recycled paper means paper containing generally 30 percent post-consumer fiber for uncoated paper, and 10 percent for coated paper.
- Use vegetable (soybean, safflower, linseed, canola and corn) inks for your printer. These inks are more biodegradable than petroleum-based inks.
- Reduce ozone exposure. Be sure the service provider of your copier and laser printer changes the ozone filter every 50,000 copies, even if it doesn't look dirty.
- Use one-sided copies that were mistakes for printing drafts and faxes, or for notes. Keep a box labeled "For Scrap" near your copier or printer.
- Avoid self-adhesive labels and postage stamps.
- Faculty: use Blackboard to communicate with students to cut paper use in the classroom.
Eating on Campus:
- Avoid disposable plates, cups, and utensils.
- Pack lunch in reusable containers.
- Consider a water filter for your office/home to save buying disposable bottled water.
- Bring your own cup to meetings.
- Attend Environmental Council events.
- Talk to friends /co-workers about your ecological concerns.
