GOLDEN LIONS DROP TO CALDWELL IN GAME 2, 7-3

Rindge, NH - #5 Dowling was defeated by #4 Caldwell College 7-3 in the second round of the NCAA Northeast Regional at Franklin Pierce University. Dowling drops to 29-17 as Caldwell improved to 34-17.

The rain at Franklin Pierce finally came, but not before Dowling jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over #4 Caldwell Cougars after 2 complete innings. Dowling scored in the 1st, taking advantage of some Cougar miscues in the field. Eddie Squeri (Shirley, NY) scored from second on a David Wendt (Methuen, MA) pop fly dropped by the second basemen. Starter Chris Piowtrowski (Holbrook, NY) held Caldwell in check for the first two innings, striking out two. Caldwell threatened in the first, with one out and a runner on third, Kevin Resse (Ronkonkoma, NY) fielded a grounder at short and threw a seed to Wendt who tagged out the runner, keeping the game at 1-0.

After the rain delay, Caldwell quickly tied it up in the bottom of the third and pulled ahead, tacking on a run in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Chris Caputo (West Islip, NY) would cut the Cougar lead to 4-2 with a solo home run to right center, his first of the season. Piotrowski would be replaced by Justin Brooks (Averill Park, NY) who would work out of trouble in th 6th before giving up a three run homerun to Caldwell catcher Chris Chiarappa that put the game out of reach. The Golden Lions would push a run across in the 9th but Caldwell would hold on for the win.

Caputo went 2-4 with an RBI ans starter Piotrowski dropped to 6-3 on the year going 5, allowing 3 runs all earned, striking out 3. Robert Casal picked up the win for Caldwell and improved to 9-4. Casal struck out 8 Golden Lions for the complete game win, scattering 4 hits allowing 3 runs, one earned.

Dowling plays #2 Bryant tonight at 9:30 PM in a elimination game.
