GOLDEN LIONS RELEASE ROAR, TAKE DOWN #2 NYIT 15-14
Brookhaven , NY- In a clawbitter at Golden Lions Field, #8 Dowling upsets #2 NYIT 15-14 on a golden goal by Nick Cotter (Whitby, Ontario) with :17 left. Dowling improves to 12-3, 4-2 in ECC play while NYIT sufferes its first loss of the season, dropping to 11-1, 5-1 in the ECC.
NYIT got out to a 2-0 lead on back to back goals by Paul Flowers (Manchester, England). Dowling and the Bears traded goals to close the quarter and NYIT lead 4-2. Dowling came out roaring in the second, outscoring the Bears 7-2 taking a 8-5 lead into the half. Cotter scored two of his 5 in the second and Kevin Rimmer scored 2 on the run for the Golden Lions.
The excitement of the packed record crowd of 2,278 continued throughout the second half. Dowling's defense kept NYIT off balance and held their 3 goal advantage going into a highly anticipated and very exciting final quarter of play. In the fourth, Dowling pushed their lead to 4 twice on goals by Ryan Campbell (Brampton, Ontario) and Cotter's 4th of the game. NYIT didn't give up as Flowers would start a 5-0 Bears run capped by an Austin Carino (Huntington, NY) goal to give the Bears their first lead of the second half, 14-13. The game tying goal came off an very well executed offensive possesion by the Golden Lions. Kyle O'Brien (Whitby, Ontario) would fake a pass and find a cutting John McClure (Brampton, Ontario) in the crease for a quick stick goal. The next face-off was won by McClure and Dowling retained possesion in its end. After a Golden Lions timeout, Dowling set up a play run from behind the back of the net where Ed Hoctor (Selden, NY) set-up Cotter for the game winner
Along with Cotter's 5, O'Brien had 3 goals and 2 assists for Dowling and Campbell had 3 goals and 2 assists. The Bears were led by Carino who scored 6 goals and Matt Messina who scored 1 goal and added 3 assists.
The Golden Lions await their postseason fate as the NCAA selection call will take place tomorrow night at 6:30 on CSTV.
