GOLDEN LIONS TOP COUGARS 4-2
Brookhaven, NY- In non-conference action this afternoon, the Golden Lions defeated the Cougars of Caldwell College, 4-2. The victory jumps Dowling to 25-17 overall.
The Golden Lions jumped on the board early in the bottom of the first with an RBi single to left field by Kevin Reese (Ronkonkona, NY) to score Brian Fergusen (Ronkonkoma, NY) at the plate for the go ahead run. With the bases loaded in the bottom three, Eddie Squeri (Shirley, NY) stole home off a Caldwell passed ball for a 2-0 DC hold. The Cougars picked up a run in the top of the fourth off a Dowling thirdbase error to inch within one (2-1). Eddie Squeri (Shirley, NY) smacked a single to left field to advance Colin Barnathan (Massapequa, NY) to second with zero outs on the board in the bottom five. Reese hit a sacrifice bunt to advance runners into scoring position as Dave Wendt (Methuen, MA) smashed down an RBI single for a 3-1 lead. The Golden Lions picked up another run in the fifth off a Barnathan RBI single for a 4-1 hold over the Cougars. In the top of the eighth, the Cougars, Chris Chiarappa, hit an RBI single to left field to inch within two of Dowling's hold.
Kevin McCormack (Islip, NY) pitched eight complete innings from the mound for the Golden Lions with 2 strikeouts, and 1 earned run. Joe Trainor (Massapequa, NY) secured the win for Dowling as he shut out the Cougars in the top of the ninth.
The Golden Lions resume conference play this weekend, May 3rd against the Purple Knights of Bridgeport. Come join us for our "Release the Roar" opening day celebration of our new Brookhaven stadium. First pitch is set for 12:00.
