SOFTBALL FALLS TO MERCY COLLEGE

Brookhaven, NY- The Golden Lions dropped both games of a double header to the Mavericks of Mercy College 3-2 and 10-3.  Dowling falls to 5-15 on the season and 0-2 in ECC play.  Mercy improves to 6-7, 2-0 in the ECC.

Game 1

The Mavericks opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd inning putting up 2 runs off 3 hits.  The Golden Lions countered in the bottom half of the inning when Keri Boystak (Lindenhurst, NY) led off the inning reaching on a Mercy error.  Alison Gallagher (Lindenhurst, NY) singled up the middle to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out.  Stephanie Compitello (Bohemia, NY) put the ball in play and with another Mercy error Boystak scored DC’s first run of the game.   In the 3rd inning Mercy would tack on another run to give them a 2 run lead.  The Golden Lions came up in the bottom of the 7th where Emily Nyman (Islip, NY) led off with a walk.  Taras Wallace (Barnegat, NJ) hit a shot off the center field fence that would plate Nyman and but DC within one.  Mercy pitcher, Stephanie Pereyo retired the final two batters to give the Mavericks a 3-2 win.

Mercy’s Chelsea Methot went 3 for 3 with an RBI and Dowling’s Jackie Hannan (Sayville, NY) and Marci Bodanzio (Ronkonkoma, NY) each had 2 hits in the game.  On the mound for the Mavericks, Pereyo went 7 innings and gave up 2 runs on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts.  For the Golden Lions Jamie Stalter (Bohemia, NY) threw 7 innings, giving up 3 runs on 10 hits and 4 strikeouts and falls to 1-5 on the season.

Game 2


In game 2 the Golden Lions jumped on the board scoring a run in the 1st when Wallace knocked in her 21st run of the season with a double up the middle giving DC a 1-0 lead.   The Mavericks came back in the 3rd after 2 back to back single and a walk loaded the bases with 2 outs.  Mercy’s Mothot doubled in the right center gap to give them a 2-1 lead.  A Golden Lion error allowed 2 more runs to cross the plate making the score 4-1.  Mercy would continue to score 2 more runs in the 4th off relief pitcher Julia Carbone (East Williston, NY).  Dowling produced a run in the bottom half of the inning when Wallace hit the right center gap to score Lisa Compitello (Bohemia, NY) making the game 6-2.  The Mavericks weren’t phased as they tallied 4 more runs on 7 hits to bring the score to 10-2 through 5 1/2 innings of play.  Dowling put up a run in the 6th but is was not enough as the fell to Mercy College 10-3.

Mercy’s Methot and Stephanie Owsiany each went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.  Wallace finished the game with 3 hits and all 33 Golden Lion RBIs.  Maverick pitcher Jessica Madick went 5 innings giving up 2 runs on 7 hits with 4 strikeouts before giving way to Samantha LaBella who finished the game giving up 1 run on 1 hit.  Dowling’s starter Stephanie Plochochi (Sayville, NY) completed 3 innings and gave up 4 runs on 5 hits.  Carbone threw 2+ innings and surrendered 6 runs on 8 hits while Cameron tossed the last inning for the Golden Lions.

Dowling takes on Bloomfield College at home Thursday, March 26th 3:00pm.
