Requirements for NYS Certification

The cornerstone of our Education program is the student teaching experience. Our student teachers spend more time in classrooms observing and learning than those in other education programs, earning a well-deserved reputation as being best prepared for their first professional elementary, secondary, or special education positions.

In the beginning, all students are notified of Preliminary Student Teaching Seminars where insight and instruction are offered to students of the School of Education. Seminars are offered on different dates and times to meet the diverse, demanding schedules of our student body.

Weeks prior to the student teaching experience, the Office of Student Teaching hosts mandated meetings where you are acquainted with your observer. At this time, students are provided with a comprehensive guide book and are familiarized with student teaching expectations.

Depending on the educational track you’ve selected, you may be required to complete one semester of part-time student teaching (three half-days each week) and one semester of full-time student teaching (five full-days each week) to meet New York State Certification requirements.
