Department of Psychology

Department of Psychology

Psychology involves the study of mind and behavior. It includes many aspects of the human experience from neuroscience to identity. At Dowling we offer a B.A. in Psychology as well as many courses that can be taken by non-majors on popular topics such as abnormal psychology, social psychology, personality psychology, developmental psychology, physiological psychology, human sexuality, and many more. One of the most popular majors at Dowling, we offer most courses every year or even every semester. An undergraduate degree in psychology lets students continue in graduate degree programs in fields such as clinical psychology, counseling or social work ultimately (after earning an appropriate graduate degree) leading to careers as psychologists or counselors. The undergraduate psychology degree is also excellent preparation in human relations, research and critical thinking, helping students who want to pursue other types of careers after graduation such as business or human services.

Ashley Stang
Psychology Major, SeniorAndrea Stang is a senior at Dowling College. She is a Psychology major and Social Work minor, and plans to go to graduate school to pursue a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. Andrea has committed herself to service as President of the Psychology Club because the club gives students the chance to get to know their professors in the department, who all have very different backgrounds, experiences, and areas of interest. The psychology club is a great opportunity for students to learn different perspectives and have new experiences that can help students figure out what path they may want to follow in their journeys through the field of psychology.
