Department of English

Department of English

Dowling’s English Department is dedicated to providing pre-professional training for students desiring careers in teaching, writing and communication.  With a range of courses in grammar and composition, creative writing across the genres (from video game writing to film writing to young adult fiction), and classic and contemporary literature, Dowling’s English Department is focused on training students in the critical skills essential for professional success.  Every Dowling English major is encouraged to participate in an internship program to gain real-world, hands-on experience.  In recent years, Dowling students have interned at such companies as Cablevision, Marvel Comics, Nickelodeon and Dan’s Papers.

Currently, we have three tracks within the major (with a fourth track forthcoming):

  • Creative Writing
  • Literature
  • Secondary English Education.
  • Professional Writing (forthcoming)

Our students are future teachers, future writers, and future movers and shakers, many of whom go on to graduate school for a Masters in Education, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, or a law degree.  In fact, training in English prepares students for a wide range of lucrative careers in advertising, corporate communications, public relations, journalism, publishing, and/or careers of passion in the arts.

The English Department focuses first and foremost on training students in writing, composition, and argumentation.  Skill in written communication is essential for success in any field in today’s competitive market.  On the creative side, we have embraced genre fiction and contemporary creative mediums, offering courses in topics such as blogging, song writing, and video game writing in addition to tv, fiction, and poetry writing.

One of our strengths is class size.  Average class size for English courses is 12-15, and many of our faculty meet one-on-one with students for writing tutorials.  We know each and every one of our students, and work to both motivate and educate them.  In addition, we offer numerous classes online, taught by full-time faculty, to provide additional schedule flexibility, especially for students who work.  Online courses, done correctly, provide students an opportunity to workshop together and learn from each other as well as from the professor.  With the rigorous training you get as a Dowling English major, you’ll graduate fully prepared to pursue your chosen career.
