Master of Science in Special Education
(HEGIS 0808) 30-45 credits
The Special Education program offers teacher certification in
Childhood, or Adolescence with Special Education. The Special
Education program offers an annotation in specialized areas for
individuals who are severely disabled. The sequence of courses
offered in the graduate program reflects the mission, goals, and
objectives needed to become a competent educator in the field of
Special Education. The courses address a broad range of
competencies necessary to provide sound instructional services for
students with special needs. The courses merge issues related to the
field of special education with practice, and reflect best practices in
assessment and instruction with a supervised field placement.
Applicants seeking certification in Special Education who hold
teacher certification in another area with at least one introductory
course in Special Education, or who have completed a baccalaureate
degree with a minor in Special Education or its equivalent may
complete 30 semester hours of credits (Option I). Candidates who
hold a Bachelors degree and are seeking certification in Special
Education may fulfill the 45 - credit program plus meet the State
Education Department standard required for certification (Option II).
Applicants who hold New York State Certification in Special
Education wishing to complete the 30 hours for Professional
Certification must complete 24 credits in Special Education and
complete 6 credits in a field of interest at the graduate level. A 3 hour
supervised placement is required prior to certification. For
Professional Certification candidates must have completed two years
of teaching experience in Special Education (Option III). All
candidates are required to successfully complete the appropriate
portions of the New York Teacher Certification Examinations.

Option III - Professional Master’s Certification
Program 30 credits
A Professional Certification program is available for professionals
holding New York State Certification in Special Education. Course
requirements will be determined through individual advisement
following acceptance into the program.
The Professional Master’s Certification Program requires
candidates to complete an Annotation for Certification for students
who have severe or multiple disabilities. The 30 credit Masters meets
the candidate’s requirement in areas of Childhood, and Middle
Childhood.
An annotation for certification for students who have severe or
multiple disabilities is available for professionals holding New York
State Certification in Special Education.
