General Education Goals and Objectives: Skills


Skills
  1. Goal: Each graduate shall be competent in reading.
    Objectives: Each graduate shall demonstrate an ability to read:
    1. Current newspapers and popular news magazines with understanding and critical comprehension.
    2. Fiction and poetry with an informed appreciation for figurative language.
    3. Primary source materials in the student's major area of study with sufficient understanding to be able to summarize the content in his or her own words.

  2. Goal: Each graduate shall be competent in writing.
    Objectives: Each graduate shall demonstrate an ability to write an expository essay of moderate length that evidences:
    1. An ability to organize and develop ideas.
    2. An awareness of grammatical and syntactical conventions.
    3. A vocabulary adequate for the expression of complex ideas.
    4. An appropriate and consistent choice of style, tone and point-of-view.
    5. An awareness of the principles and practices relative to the use of source materials including quotation, paraphrase, and footnotes.

  3. Goal: Each graduate shall be competent in computation.
    Objectives: Each graduate shall demonstrate:
    1. An ability to perform simple algebraic calculations.
    2. An understanding of the basic principles of plane geometry.
    3. An understanding of basic statistical concepts such as mean, median and mode; range and standard deviation; probability.
    4. An ability to read and construct graphs and charts.
    5. Familiarity with the use of traditional and metric measurements including the ability to convert one to the other.

  4. Goal: Each graduate shall be competent in speaking and listening.
    Objectives: Each graduate shall demonstrate an ability to:
    1. Ask and answer questions coherently and concisely.
    2. Give and follow spoken instructions.
    3. Comprehend lectures and discussions so as to be able to accurately summarize their content.
    4. Participate effectively in a structured discussion.
    5. Prepare and deliver a speech in a manner appropriate to the topic, the purpose, and the audience.

  5. Goal: Each graduate shall be competent in reasoning.
    Objectives: Each graduate shall demonstrate an ability to:
    1. Distinguish between thought and feeling, fact and opinion.
    2. Recognize and use inductive and deductive reasoning.
    3. Recognize and avoid common fallacies.
    4. Draw reasonable conclusions from the evidence.
    5. Analyze the logical structure of an argument.
    6. Development a logically sound argument."
