Twentieth-Century European History

Tenure-track Position in Anthropology/Sociology

The Anthropology/Sociology Department invites applications for a tenure-track position in cultural anthropology. Geographical area open, with preference for Africa or Latin America. Topical specialty: Globalization and/or international development, especially health, alternative or radical economic theory and practice (e.g. emic ways to measure well-being), poverty, migration, conflict resolution. Literacy Education Department

Position 1: Full-time tenure Assistant/Associate Professor of the Literacy Education Department
Dowling College’s Literacy Education Department has a full-time, tenure track, assistant/associate professor position available. We seek a colleague to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy. The position requires a doctoral degree in Reading/Literacy. It is expected that, in addition to teaching, the candidate will provide leadership in developing program and research initiatives, pursue an active research and publication agenda, and be an active member of the College and higher education professional community. We are particularly interested in candidates with strengths in the areas of formal/informal reading assessment and content area reading instruction. The appointments will begin with the academic year 2008-2009.

Position 2: Director of the Dowling College Literacy Practicum
Dowling College’s Literacy Education Department has a full-time, tenure track, assistant/associate professor position available. We seek a colleague to serve as the Director of the Dowling College Literacy Practicum. The Literacy Practicum experience is the culminating course in the Masters Degree in Literacy Education Program. It is expected that the candidate will provide leadership in developing program and research initiatives, pursue an active research and publication agenda, and be an active member of the College and higher education professional community. The Director of the Literacy Practicum receives six (6) on-load credits for supervising graduate students who are engaged in one-to-one, balanced literacy instruction. Dowling College's School of Aviation Tenure Track Position

Dowling College's School of Aviation is seeking applicants for a tenure track position. A Ph.D. degree in an aviation related field or a Ph.D. degree in business with expertise in an aviation related field is required. Experience within the aviation industry is preferred as is teaching experience within a higher education environment. Applicants nearing Ph.D. graduation will be considered. Psychology Department Tenure Track Position

The Psychology Department at Dowling College announces a tenure track position at the assistant professor rank beginning September 1, 2009. Applicants with a background in cognitive, social-cognitive or developmental psychology or academic clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists with relevant expertise will be considered. Applicant must possess a PhD in field. Position requires teaching undergraduate courses in cognitive psychology, statistics and experimental design, and graduate courses in statistics and research methods, as well as cognitive and affective aspects of behavior. An active research program which includes undergraduates is strongly desired, gender/sexuality studies a plus, as well as a strong commitment to working productively in an expanding Psychology department which plans for a PsyD. Department Of Educational Administration, Leadership And Technology
The department is seeking an accomplished professor and scholar to join a strong and expanding program beginning as early as the spring semester 2009. The candidate will be expected to teach and advise graduate and doctoral candidates with a focus on Statistical Operations, Community Relations, Change and Organization Theory, Curriculum Design and Dissertation Design. In addition, the candidate is expected to supervise student research and provide instruction in the Advanced Certificate programs for School Building and District Leaders with a focus on School Law. The candidate will have an earned doctorate in educational leadership or a related field from an accredited institution, plus several years of teaching experience in higher education.

Department Of Sport Management And Physical Education
The department is seeking a professor with a terminal degree in Sport Management to join the faculty in fall 2009, with interviews taking place fall 2008. It is preferred that the candidate have sport management work experience, as well as previous college teaching experience at the graduate and undergraduate levels. It is further desired that the candidate have the ability to design sport management curriculum for a graduate program, as well as the ability and experience in supervising internships.

Department: Public Relations & Communications

General Description:

Responsible for designing, creating, modifying, updating, and managing multiple Dowling College websites and intranets. Assures that all web pages comply with appropriate policies, guidelines, and standards. Work with various departments to create and optimize user interface and content for Dowling College’s web site using a variety of graphics, database, animation and other software.

Duties:
  1. Designing and implementing the ongoing development of Dowling College’s websites.
  2. Collaborate with various departments, faculty members and students to best optimize their content for online deployment.
  3. Managing day-to-day site maintenance on Dowling College website.
  4. Setting standards for design, performing navigation and browser compatibility, performing quality-control for content, and maintaining and develop web applications.
  5. Coding maintainable HTML, ASP, CSS.
  6. Developing and maintaining web applications using PHP, mySQL.
  7. Managing and maintaining web and application servers.
  8. Designing and maintaining Dowling College’s Staff/Faculty Intranet and Student Intranet.
  9. Develops new areas for Dowling College website and both intranets.
  10. Provide excellent customer service to all levels of users and encourage timeliness and accuracy of web page information and resolution of problems.
  11. Conversion of existing images (TIFF, BMP, PSD) for online use (JPG, GIF) using Adobe ImageReady and PhotoShop.
  12. Work with network personnel on issues of hardware/software that affect the web site.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master degree preferred.
  • Experience in web designing and managing in higher education.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of website publishing process/publication and proficient in hand html coding.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of PHP, ASP, CSS, JSP, DHTML, JavaScript, browser compatibility issues for all platforms/major browsers.
  • Knowledge of MySQL, Visual Basic, Java, Microsoft Access, XML.
  • Must have strong computer skills and knowledge of QuarkXpress, Adobe Photoshop, ImageReady, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat, & MacroMedia Flash.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills a must.

Biology Tenure Track Position

Dowling College’s Department of Biology is seeking applicants for a full-time tenure track position. The Applicant will be required to teach two upper-level biology courses, Human Physiology and Vertebrate Biology as well as Introductory Biology and general science classes. Preference will be given to those who can also teach Developmental Biology and/or Human Anatomy. The applicant should possess research expertise in organismal/multicellular biology that complements at least one of the required upper-level courses. A PhD in Biology or Zoology is required. Political Science Faculty Position

Dowling College has a tenure-track full-time faculty position in Political Science beginning September 2008. The successful candidate will teach courses in the American Politics field, Modern Political Thought, and American Political Thought. The ability to teach an introductory course in Quantitative Analysis is welcome. A Ph.D. is required and teaching experience is preferred.

Flight Instructor (Full-time and Part-time Positions)

Department: School of Aviation

General Description:
Responsible for conducting individual flight instruction with Dowling College Flight students. To include ground lessons and flight simulation training for their students.

Typical Duties:

  • Conduct flight training for the Private Pilot Flight Lab, Instrument Rating Flight Lab, Commercial Pilot Flight Lab, Multi-Engine Flight Lab and all Flight Instructor Flight Labs. Flight Instruction will include all basic and advanced flight maneuvers such as steep turns, turns around a point, normal take-offs and landings, short and soft field take-offs and landings, power on and power off stalls, chandelles and lazy eights. It will also include day and night cross-country flights of up to 300 nautical miles form Brookhaven Airport under both VFR and IFR conditions. Instructors will also give extensive emergency procedures training to students during all stages of flight.
  • Conduct one-on-one ground school training to each student on there particular course. Ground training will include aerodynamics, aero-medical factors, high altitude operations, ground operations, etc. Instructors are also required to do oral examinations of the material covered in previous lessons. A minimum of 20 minutes will be spent on each lesson conducting pre and post flight briefings.
  • Conduct flight simulation in the FRASA 241 and 242. Instructors will introduce all maneuvers in the simulator prior to performing the maneuver in the airplane.
  • Scheduling of flight and ground training sessions will be the instructors' responsibility. Instructors will have each student on for two, 2 hour lessons each week. The instructor will coordinate with their students to ensure students are aware of their lesson time and what type of equipment will be used.
  • Instructors are responsible for obtaining FAA required documentation (birth certificate, passport, driver license, medical etc.) from students and turning it in to the Assistant Chief Flight Instructor.
  • Instructors are required to log every flight in each students personal logbook and 141 record folder. They must also track total time, dual time, solo time, cross-country time, night time and number of take-offs and landing. Instructors are required to log and track any other necessary time not mentioned.
  • Conduct tours for perspective students of aircraft, flight simulators and ATC laboratory. Instructors must have a working knowledge of Dowling College in order to adequately answer any question presented by either a student or parent.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of 200 flight hours
  • Commercial Pilot Certificate
  • Certified Flight Instructor Certificate

    Bus Driver – On Call

    Department: Facilities Services/Transportation

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
    Reports to the Senior Facilities Administrator. The principal assignment of this position is to professionally transport the college’s students and such other persons as may from time to time be required, in a safe, efficient manner, subject to the rules and regulations provided by the college, while to the extent possible also protecting the college equipment from damage.

    Typical Duties:

    1. Drive the vehicles of the college in a safe manner, obeying all traffic laws pertinent to the transportation of students and other passengers.
    2. Must maintain a clean valid New York State Driver License.
    3. Attend all training programs and other meetings as required unless specifically excused by college administration.
    4. Inspect and report to the college as required, the condition of the vehicle driven, including physical damage, maintenance conditions, and other issues pertinent to the efficient and safe operation of the vehicles.
    5. Report to college administration any new moving traffic violation recorded on license, regardless of whether it occurred on or off the job, within 10 days of its recording on the driver’s license.
    6. Provide once per year, within two months prior to September 1, certification from a physician that the driver’s health is satisfactory to continue driving for the college, and certification from an ophthalmologist or other eye care professional that the driver’s vision is satisfactory to continue driving for the college.
    7. Be knowledgeable about and follow all college procedures and requirements concerning reporting of any accident involving a college vehicle.
    8. Report to the college any change in health, personal circumstances, or other condition that may adversely affect the employee’s ability to satisfactorily perform these tasks as required.
    Minimum Qualifications:
    Possess a CDL appropriate to permit employee to drive any bus carrying passengers.

    SALARY: Commensurate with experience.

    Adjunct Librarian Teaching Positions - Fall 2008

    Dean of Students, Chief Judicial Officer

    DEPARTMENT: Student Services

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
    Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Student Services, the Dean of Students, Chief Judicial Officer, will play a lead role in the creating, revising and overseeing of college policies, practices and procedures in key student services areas including judicial affairs, mediation, residential life, student activities, orientation, parent and family programs and student leadership development.

    TYPICAL DUTIES:

    • Serve as Chief Judicial Officer (CJO) for all student judicial matters.
    • Serve as the primary hearing officer responsible for managing the disciplinary and conduct process, promoting and maintaining students’ rights and responsibilities, in addition, upholding behavioral expectations and community standards.
    • Responsible for developing and implementing informal resolution and mediation procedures.
    • Review all incident reports submitted to the Dean’s Office to determine appropriate action. Meet with students who allegedly violated the student code of conduct to ascertain their levels of involvement. Adjudicate cases and assign educational sanctions as appropriate.
    • Maintain files on all disciplinary cases and informational incident reports and track all sanctions and sanction compliance.
    • Develop and manage community service programs and student participation related to disciplinary sanctions.
    • Collaborate with other campus offices to develop and present educational seminars each semester regarding student expectations and academic integrity for members of the community, new student orientation and other groups as necessary.
    • Remain up to date on legal issues in higher education and their relevance to campus judicial practices.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Master’s degree required in higher education/student services, counseling or law with five or more years of progressively responsible experience in student services, enrollment services and/or residence life. Strong team leadership and management skills required, including the ability to analyze trends and provide recommendations and appropriate action. Excellent oral, listening, written and presentation skills required. Knowledge of computer and system capabilities as related to all facets of student services and residence life is highly desirable. Initiative, ability to work independently and strong follow-up skills are essential
