The Second Floor

According to the E.A. White marketing brochure, "All master rooms have fireplaces imported marbles, no two alike. . . On the walls of the house and wings are thousands of yards of imported cut velvet; in the master bedrooms, brocatelle and French brocade, and the guest room fine linens. . . Every bedroom is a different color scheme and the furniture in every bedroom is a different design." The Suffolk County News offers a detailed account of the second floor: "Mr. Vanderbilt's own suite of rooms as well as all of the guest chambers are located on the second floor. The owner's suite consists of a blue room, a lilac room and a green room, all connecting. These rooms, as well as the halls and guest chambers and the rooms set apart for Mr. Vanderbilt's close friend, Mr. Winfield Scott Hoyt, have the walls covered with silk tapestry, the carpets, hangings and in many cases the upholstery of the furniture being always of harmonizing tint, and frequently of the same design as the wall coverings. Every guest chamber, and there are eighteen of them, has a handsome marble mantel and fireplace of special design, and some of them are of the most beautiful onyx or similar material. They were imported, having been selected by Mr. Vanderbilt, during his travels abroad. Each of the chambers has a bathroom connecting, and these are furnished in mahogany with floors and walls of tile and the most luxurious fittings."
