Dowling College At A Glance
History:
Founded in 1955 as part of Adelphi College's outreach to Suffolk County, the
College purchased the former W.K. Vanderbilt estate in Oakdale in 1962. In 1968 the College became an
independent institution and was renamed after its chief benefactor, Robert Dowling, a noted city
planner and aviator.
Locations:
The Rudolph Campus is located just 50 miles east of Manhattan and just minutes from
the ocean beaches on Long Island, New York. Brookhaven Campus is located 18 miles east on the
William Floyd Parkway in Shirley. Free shuttle bus service between campuses. Selected courses are
offered at the Melville Center.
Accreditation:
Dowling College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (3624 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19104; (267)284-5000) which is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, the New York State Department of Education (DOE), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Degrees Conferred:
Dowling confers academic degrees to approximately 1,500 students annually (undergrad/grad/doctoral). Undergraduate
Degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Business Administration. Graduate Degrees: Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of
Business Administration, Doctor of Education. Advanced Certificate Programs through the School of Education and School of Business.
Tuition (2007-2008):
Undergraduate Tuition rate per credit: $606 or $18,180 for 30 credits (Annual). Graduate Tuition per credit hour: $700.
Doctoral Program: $44,000 (Full Program).
Financial Aid:
88% of full-time undergraduate students received some form of financial assistance in the 2006-2007 academic year. Sources of
assistance include: college grants and scholarships, state and federal grants, loans and work-study, and funding from private organizations.
Alumni Employment:
One year after graduation, 96% are employed or attending graduate school: 26% teachers, 26% managers, 24% other
professionals, 8% sales, 4% administrators, 4% other occupations and 4% graduate students. Employers include JP Morgan Chase, Metropolitan
Transit Authority, Citibank, Mount Sinai Medical Center, CIGNA, Farmingdale State University, ADP, Marcum & Kleigman, and State Farm. Annual
salaries average $57,987, with a range of $130,000 to $15,000 and median of $50,000. 64% report working in an industry related to their major at
Dowling.

More than 29 clubs and organizations, numerous annual theme events, performing arts and trips, an active Student

Facilities:
Since 2000, $28 million has been invested in campus infrastructure including installation of "smart" classrooms, refurbishment of
residence halls, dining and restroom facilities, new science equipment, conversion of aircraft hanger into 15 new classrooms, total of 11 new aircraft
and 3 new flight simulators for the School of Aviation flight training.
School of Aviation:
State-of-the-art flight simulators and aircraft including 9 Piper Warriors, an Arrow and a twin engine Seminole. All planes
are equipped with the latest instrumentation and avionics including IFR certified Garmin Global Position Systems with moving map capability. New
NASA funded airport management simulation lab. Graduates of the program may obtain all pilot certificates and ratings. One of only 14 institutions
in the AT-CTI program for prospective Air Traffic Controllers.
Residence Halls:
495 students at the Rudolph Campus and Brookhaven Campus. Apartment-style residence living with internet and telephone
connection for each student. Room and board per semester starts at $4,380; There was a waiting list last year. Submit Residence Application, $200.00
Room Deposit, and register as soon as possible.
Library:
Full service library at the Rudolph Campus and a reference and reserves library at the
Brookhaven Campus; 218,000 volumes for student use; databases can be accessed from home.
Technology:
"Smart" Classrooms with digital data projectors, Internet access, VCR and DVD;
Blackboard Learning System supports instruction and communication; wireless network connections in
the cafes, libraries, and student lounges on both campuses; BANNER WEB for student records.
Athletics:
Dowling's championship program is in the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) Division II, and East Coast Conference: Men's and Women's: Basketball, Cross Country,
Lacrosse, Rowing, Soccer, and Tennis. Men's: Baseball, Golf. Women's: Volleyball, Softball. Club
Sports: Bowling, Cheerleading, Equestrian, Rowing.
