Dr. Myrka A. Gonzalez
Myrka A. Gonzalez has been a practicing attorney for over thirty years, representing individuals and businesses. She received her Doctoral Degree from Dowling in 2002 and her Juris Doctor Degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 1982. She was a full time English college instructor at Imperial Valley College, and an adjunct professor at SUNY Suffolk Community College.
She has been awarded many honors, and in 2011, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law from Dowling College. She has also received the Association of Fundraising Professionals Philanthropist of the Year, the Juliette Low Award of Distinction, Long Island Latina Leader, Urban League Honoree, and the Town of Islip Hispanic Heritage Award. She has served on the Chairman’s Counsel of the Heckscher Museum of Art, the Board of Directors of the Suffolk County Boy Scouts, and on the Education Committee of the Suffolk County Bar Association. She has been published numerous times, including legal and educational articles published in Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, Latin Trends, L.I. Educational Review, Latin Long Island, and La Tribuna. Dr. Gonzalez has presented papers in Bordeaux, France; Hilton Head, South Carolina; Houston, Texas and Albany, New York.
Myrka and her husband, David Ochoa, established the “Myrka Gonzalez and David Ochoa Latino Scholarship Award” at Dowling College in 2001. The same year they established the “Myrka Gonzalez and David Ochoa Endowed Scholarship” for Hofstra University School of Law.
